Overview
This is an entry-level Civil Engineering opportunity in Lynchburg, VA for candidates who will participate in an Employee Development Growth Experience (EDGE) program. You will apply classroom engineering knowledge to real-world transportation and infrastructure projects, develop technical and leadership skills, and support multi-discipline engineering work under the supervision of experienced staff at our Confidential Client.
What You’ll Do
- Participate in the EDGE program to develop technical and leadership competencies across civil engineering disciplines.
- Apply engineering fundamentals to prepare analyses, reports, recommendations, and technical documentation.
- Support project engineering tasks: scope, schedule, budget tracking, deliverables, change control, quality checks, and status reporting.
- Provide technical support and consultation in areas such as Location & Design, Materials, Construction, Structure & Bridge, Maintenance, Environmental, Traffic Engineering, and Planning.
- Assist with field work and construction inspections; document findings and support contractor coordination.
- Communicate effectively with internal teams, consultants, local government staff, and the public.
- Use established agency policies and procedures to deliver projects in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Manage assigned activities to meet scope, schedule, and quality expectations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (completed or in-progress to be completed by start date) in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related ABET-accredited program.
- Ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam and obtain Engineering-in-Training (EIT) designation within 12 months of employment.
- At least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
- Basic computer skills (MS Office); familiarity with project management and engineering software is a plus.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering and highway construction plans.
Preferred / Additional Considerations
- Possession of the EIT designation at time of hire is preferred.
- Experience with roadway design, geometric design applications, pavement and geotechnical concepts, or transportation planning.
- Experience interpreting technical plans, specifications, and construction documents.
- Prior internship or co-op experience in transportation or civil engineering environments.
Compensation & Benefits
- Estimated salary: $69,658 per year (estimated).
