What You’ll Do

This entry‑level engineer participates in the Employee Development Growth Experience (EDGE) Program to develop the technical and leadership competencies required of an Architect/Engineer I. You will apply civil engineering fundamentals across multiple transportation disciplines and support project delivery from planning through construction.

  • Analyze and interpret engineering data; prepare clear reports and recommendations.
  • Communicate and coordinate with internal staff, local government, consultants, FHWA and the public.
  • Support construction activities including field inspections and project documentation.
  • Apply established state and federal policies, standards, and procedures to engineering projects.
  • Assist with roadway design, materials, structures/bridges, right of way, traffic engineering, environmental review, and maintenance-related engineering tasks.
  • Help plan, schedule and manage assigned project activities, deliverables and status reporting.
  • Participate in special assignments, committees, and program initiatives as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (completed or will be completed by start date) in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or related ABET‑accredited program.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles to complete projects and tasks independently when required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
  • Must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) exam and obtain the Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) designation within 12 months of employment.
  • Basic computer competency (MS Office; familiarity with project/engineering software preferred).
  • Familiarity with construction and maintenance contract policies and procedures.

Preferred / Additional Considerations

  • Prior coursework or experience in roadway design, geometric design, pavement, materials or geotechnical topics.
  • Experience interpreting technical plans and specifications and working on transportation projects.
  • Possession of the Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) designation at time of hire is a plus.
  • Demonstrated teamwork, customer service skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to draw conclusions from technical data.
  • Knowledge of roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards and specifications.
  • Project management basics: scope, schedule, budget tracking and reporting.
  • Commitment to safety and ethical conduct in all work activities.

Physical Requirements

  • Typical fieldwork requirements for transportation projects (site visits, inspections, occasional exposure to construction environments). Reasonable accommodations available as required by law.

Compensation

  • Estimated pay (from source): $106,859 per year (estimated). Exact compensation and benefits will be disclosed by the hiring organization during the recruitment process.
