Role overview

Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level EDGE Civil Engineer to join their engineering team in Lynchburg, VA. This is an early-career, full-time role in a structured Employee Development Growth Experience (EDGE) program designed to build technical and leadership skills across multiple transportation engineering specialties. The position includes hands-on project work, training, and cross-functional exposure to areas such as roadway design, construction, materials, traffic operations, and environmental compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in the EDGE program and apply civil engineering principles to assigned projects.
• Analyze engineering data and prepare clear, concise technical reports and recommendations.
• Assist with project engineering tasks: scope, schedule, budget tracking, deliverables, and status reporting.
• Support roadway design efforts, including geometric design and plan review.
• Perform field inspections and document construction activities as needed.
• Provide technical support and consultation to internal teams, local government partners, consultants, and the public.
• Apply established policies and procedures to ensure projects comply with state and federal regulations.
• Contribute to special assignments, committees, and cross-discipline workgroups as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

• Have or will have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related ABET-accredited program by the start of employment.
• Able to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) Exam and obtain Engineer-in-Training (EIT) designation within 12 months of employment.
• Basic computer skills.
• Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of employment.
• Ability to perform duties in compliance with applicable safety rules, policies, and regulations.

Preferred / Additional considerations

• Prior coursework or experience in roadway design, transportation planning, construction documentation, or materials testing.
• Experience reading and interpreting highway construction plans and specifications.
• Hold EIT designation at the time of hire (preferred).
• Any combination of training, education, or experience in civil engineering or related fields that demonstrates readiness for an entry-level engineering role.

• The role includes both office-based work and field activities (site visits, inspections). Candidates should be able to perform routine field tasks and adhere to onsite safety requirements.
