What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring Distribution SCADA Engineers / Engineer Technologists to support grid modernization projects, including Distribution Automation Circuit Reconfiguration (DACR/FLISR), Volt-VAR Optimization (VVO), Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration, remote sensing, and SCADA/RTU programming. You will work with cross-functional teams to design, program, commission, and maintain distribution automation schemes that increase reliability, lower costs, and enable efficient grid operation.

  • Perform logical programming and configuration of distribution automation controllers and RTUs.
  • Optimize distribution system performance with Distribution and System Planning Engineers.
  • Coordinate with Telecom, Station Engineering, Distribution Dispatch, Reliability, Construction, and field personnel.
  • Maintain and update automation programming as circuit topology and device inventories change.
  • Support commissioning, testing, and emergency troubleshooting of automation and SCADA systems.
  • Develop and maintain standards and documentation for grid modernization hardware, firmware, and cyber-secure designs.
  • Engage with vendors, participate in industry groups (IEEE, EPRI), and help train operating-company personnel.
  • Be available for occasional after-hours support and travel as required.
  • Follow all safety training and safe work practices.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Engineer and implement DACR/FLISR schemes for fault location, isolation, and service restoration.
  • Design and deploy Volt-Var Optimization (VVO) solutions.
  • Configure RTUs and integrate grid modernization devices into SCADA.
  • Coordinate point assignments, commissioning, testing, and ongoing maintenance with SCADA analysts and vendors.
  • Produce technical specifications, standards, and secure architectures for distribution automation.
  • Lead cross-functional communications and training to ensure successful deployments and operations.

Qualifications

Engineer Associate / Engineer Technologist — SG6 (Entry level)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET-accredited) or engineering technology (ABET-accredited preferred).
  • Passing or pursuing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is encouraged for engineering tracks.

Engineer / Engineer Technologist — SG7 (Early career)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (ABET-accredited) with typically 2+ years related experience, or Master’s degree in engineering (ABET-accredited).
  • For technologist track, 2+ years of engineering-technology experience is typical.

Engineer Senior / Engineer Technologist Senior — SG8 (Experienced)

  • Typically 4+ years related engineering experience with a Bachelor’s (ABET-accredited), or advanced degree with relevant experience.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is encouraged and preferred for Engineer Senior roles (any U.S. state or Puerto Rico—confirmation may be required).

Preferred skills and knowledge (may be demonstrated across levels):

  • Experience or coursework in SCADA, RTU programming/configuration, or distribution automation.
  • Familiarity with DACR/FLISR, VVO, DER integration, and grid modernization technologies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel and provide after-hours support when required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and secure design practices.

Locations & Compensation

Where you’ll work: On-site locations include Roanoke, VA (primary listing), New Albany, OH, Corpus Christi, TX, and Shreveport, LA. Candidates should be able to work at and travel to the assigned operating-company location.

Compensation ranges (depending on grade/level and location):

  • Engineer / Engineer Technologist SG6/SG7: $89,000 – $110,000 per year
  • Engineer Senior / Engineer Technologist Senior SG8: $98,993 – $128,689 per year
  • Overall compensation data posted: $74,551 – $128,688 per year
