Position Overview
Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level Distribution Design Engineer I to support planning, engineering, and designing electric distribution systems. This hybrid, contract role includes field work and remote/office design tasks. Training is provided. Pay: $29.00/hr.
What You’ll Do
This role supports safe, reliable, and efficient power delivery by helping determine the need, size, location, and timing of distribution infrastructure and producing design deliverables under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Plan, engineer, and design electric distribution systems for residential and commercial customers.
- Determine need, size, location, and timing of distribution infrastructure while balancing economic, environmental, regulatory, and reliability constraints.
- Develop work packages for overhead distribution, underground residential distribution (URD), and cable/conduit systems.
- Perform field engineering (site verification, gather requirements, identify conflicts).
- Perform engineering and design calculations using established procedures and applicable codes.
- Create and update distribution drawings/documentation using CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent).
- Support post-construction reviews to verify designs meet project requirements and capture lessons learned.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external utility clients to resolve design issues and align on project goals.
- Follow established engineering procedures, standards, and codes such as the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) where applicable.
- Assist with voltage, transformer, and distribution equipment design tasks.
- Communicate technical facts and basic analyses to peers and client representatives.
- Perform routine technical problem-solving within a defined scope and escalate complex issues.
- Support administrative tasks, field inspection documentation, and customer follow-up.
- Balance field inspections with office or remote design work to meet schedules and quality expectations.
- Maintain professional conduct in all client-facing interactions.
Essential Skills & Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical preferred; Mechanical, Civil, Environmental considered).
- Associate degree in a related technical field with 1–3 years relevant experience will be considered.
- Experience with electric utilities or utility consulting preferred.
- Proficiency with CAD design tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar).
- Foundational knowledge of electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering principles as they apply to power distribution.
- Ability to apply basic engineering theories and principles to develop design solutions.
- Comfortable working in both field and office/remote settings; able to perform site visits and inspections.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and walk up to 2 miles on unpaved surfaces during fieldwork.
- Reliable personal transportation for travel to field locations and client sites; valid driver’s license required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for client-facing interactions.
- Team-oriented, professional, positive attitude, and willingness to learn under supervision.
- Must live within a 40-minute radius of Hamilton, TX.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Interest or experience in power delivery projects (generation, substation, transmission, distribution).
- Familiarity with MicroStation or comparable design programs.
- Understanding of voltage considerations, pole analysis, and NESC-related requirements.
- Experience or interest in working with investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, cooperatives, and private developers.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Desire to grow professionally toward technical lead roles over time.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Hybrid arrangement: roughly 70% remote/home-based design work and ~30% field work within assigned territory (Hamilton, TX).
- This is a contract position based out of Hamilton, TX.

Pay & Benefits
- Pay range: $29.00/hr (range shown: $29.00 - $29.00/hr).
- Actual pay within this range will depend on qualifications, experience, location, and other job-related factors.
