What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is seeking an experienced Diagnostic Software Engineer (L2) to develop and validate embedded software and diagnostic test code for hardware products. In this contract role you will:

  • Develop and maintain low-level embedded software that accesses devices and peripherals using datasheets and hardware schematics
  • Implement and maintain device drivers and firmware-level code for bus systems (SPI, I2C, MDIO, PCIe)
  • Write, run, and automate diagnostic tests in C/C++ and Python to exercise hardware functionality
  • Debug hardware/software interaction issues by reading schematics and performing digital circuit analysis
  • Work in Linux-based development and test environments, including shell scripting and version control (git)
  • Contribute to continuous-integration workflows and automated test pipelines
  • Collaborate with cross-functional hardware and firmware teams to reproduce and resolve failures

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 8+ years of professional experience in embedded software development, diagnostics, or firmware engineering
  • Strong C/C++ and Python programming experience
  • Proven experience with device buses and writing device drivers (SPI, I2C, MDIO, PCIe)
  • Comfortable working in Linux environments and using common development tools
  • Experience with git and familiarity with CI concepts
  • Ability to read hardware schematics and perform digital circuit troubleshooting
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills, and a quality-oriented mindset
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship (no CPT/OPT or visa sponsorship)

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

  • Prior experience in optical telecommunication systems or networking hardware
  • Experience with embedded test frameworks and automated hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Familiarity with hardware bring-up, board-level validation, and failure analysis

Compensation & Logistics

  • Employment type: Contractor
  • Pay range: $50.00 — $57.00 per hour (USD)
  • Location: New Providence, NJ (on-site or as specified by Confidential Client)
  • This role does not provide visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
