What You’ll Do

This role supports early childhood classrooms by providing targeted, direct assistance to children who require extra help to participate successfully in group learning. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Work across multiple preschool classrooms to support children ages birth–five
  • Implement and reinforce lesson plans and developmental activities under teacher direction
  • Provide individualized attention to help children reach developmental and behavioral goals
  • Monitor and document child progress and communicate observations to lead teachers and families
  • Assist with classroom routines: meal times, transitions, toileting, and safe play
  • Support positive behavior management and inclusive practices
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized learning environment
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and required compliance activities

Required Qualifications

Candidates must meet mandatory baseline requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • One of the following certifications/education paths is required:
    • Current Child Development Associate (CDA) credential for preschool-aged children; OR
    • State-awarded certificate for center-based preschool teachers (e.g., New Mexico Child Development Certificate (CDC)); OR
    • One-year certificate in Early Childhood Education; OR
    • Office of Head Start approved CDA equivalent; OR
    • Enrolled within ten business days of hire in one of the above programs that will be completed within two years; OR
    • An Associate or Bachelor’s degree (in any area) or enrollment in a program leading to such a degree
  • Must complete a 45-hour entry-level course or an approved 3-credit early care and education course (or equivalent approved by the New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department) prior to or within six months of hire
  • Experience working with young children (birth–5 years) in an early childhood environment is preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English or Navajo/English is preferred

Certificates, Licenses & Screening

  • Must have, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, First Aid and BLS/CPR certifications that meet the organization’s training requirements
  • Position requires successful completion of post-offer screening:
    • Health exam (and periodic follow-ups per policies)
    • TB test (and upon exposure per policies)
    • Criminal background checks in accordance with the federal Head Start Act and applicable state regulations

Compensation & Schedule

  • Pay range: $16.39 – $18.87 per hour (hourly rate is dependent upon education and credentials)
  • Estimated annual compensation (for reference): ~$28,938 — actual pay is hourly and varies with hours worked and placement
  • Employment type: Full-time (schedule specifics determined by the client and program site)
  • $500 employee referral bonus (subject to eligibility and tax withholding)
