As a Design Technician supporting electric distribution projects for our confidential client, you will work with designers, engineers, project managers, field personnel, and client representatives to develop construction-ready designs. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Support design of overhead and underground electric distribution facilities, with significant opportunity to work on underground projects.
  • Develop and update design drawings, layouts, sketches, maps, and construction-ready packages using CAD, GIS, and utility-specific design tools.
  • Assist with underground facility design: cable routing, conduit systems, transformers, switchgear, handholes, manholes, and related equipment.
  • Support new service, system extensions, equipment replacements, reliability improvements, relocations, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Gather, organize, and document field information necessary for accurate designs.
  • Conduct field visits/site investigations to verify equipment locations, take measurements, and identify constraints.
  • Prepare material takeoffs, bills of material, cost estimates, plans, specifications, reports, diagrams, and construction documentation.
  • Assist with permit applications, submittals, and coordination with municipalities and agencies.
  • Update GIS, mapping, and utility records as required.
  • Coordinate with construction teams and support construction through field verification and design revisions.
  • Track assigned projects and help ensure deliverables meet quality standards and schedules.
  • Travel locally for fieldwork and project coordination as needed (approximately 20%).

Examples of Projects You May Support

  • Underground distribution: new underground services, primary/secondary cable installations, overhead-to-underground conversions, transformer/switchgear/handhole/manhole projects, conduit and cable routing, and replacements.
  • New service & customer growth: residential subdivisions, multifamily developments, and commercial/industrial service extensions.
  • Reliability & infrastructure improvements: pole/equipment replacement, conductor/cable upgrades, feeder reliability improvements, relocations, and upgrades to reduce outage risk.
  • System modernization: replacement of aging equipment, distribution capacity improvements, and resiliency-focused upgrades.

What We’re Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Open to entry-level through experienced candidates.
  • Technical aptitude and interest in electric utility design, construction, or infrastructure.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop technical drawings, maps, sketches, and construction documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate field documentation skills.
  • Comfortable working in both office and field environments.
  • Able to manage multiple assignments and work effectively on project teams.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally for project activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous electric distribution design experience, especially underground distribution.
  • Experience with cable, conduit, transformers, switchgear, handholes/manholes, or similar distribution equipment.
  • Familiarity with overhead distribution systems.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Distribution Design Studio (DDS), GIS, O-Calc, SPIDACalc, or similar applications.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, CAD/drafting, design/ construction technology, or a related technical field.
  • Prior experience with an electric utility, utility engineering consultant, contractor, electric cooperative, or infrastructure organization.
  • Knowledge of utility construction practices, permitting, easements, rights-of-way, and design standards.

Ideal Candidate Profile

You are detail-oriented, technically curious, and eager to build (or continue) a career in electric distribution design. Entry-level candidates with a strong CAD/drafting/technical foundation and a desire to learn distribution systems are encouraged to apply. Experienced candidates with hands-on distribution design (especially underground projects) who understand how designs move from field investigation through construction are also highly valued. Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential.

Compensation

  • Pay: $20.00 - $28.00 per hour (hourly range provided by the confidential client).
  • Estimated annual compensation (third-party estimate): $103,429 per year — for candidate context only; actual pay depends on location, experience, and other factors.

Why Join Our Client
