What You’ll Do

Confidential Client seeks committed Deputy Sheriffs to perform patrol and related law‑enforcement duties. Working as a Deputy Sheriff (patrol), you will protect life and property, enforce laws, and support community‑oriented policing.

  • Patrol assigned areas and respond to dispatched radio calls
  • Conduct investigations; interview witnesses, victims and suspects
  • Serve warrants and civil papers; make arrests and transport prisoners
  • Control disturbances; subdue, restrain and apprehend suspects when necessary
  • Write clear, timely incident and investigative reports using department systems
  • Provide crime prevention guidance and build public‑safety partnerships with schools, businesses and neighborhood groups
  • Participate in special assignments after eligibility (examples below)

Special assignment opportunities (after 2–3 years of patrol experience):

  • SWAT, K‑9, Narcotics, Traffic, Detectives
  • Marine Patrol, UAS (drones), Computer Forensics
  • Child Abuse Investigations, School Resource Deputy, Hostage Negotiation, Bomb Technician

Who We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)

Applicants must meet legal and job‑related requirements. In keeping with US hiring laws, these criteria are stated as job‑related qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • United States Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident at time of appointment
  • Ability to read and write English (per RCW requirement noted in source)
  • Valid driver’s license at time of appointment
  • No prior felony or domestic violence convictions; no recent or excessive drug usage history
  • Ability to perform essential mental, verbal, visual and physical demands of the role (see Physical Requirements below)

Preferred / incentive qualifications:

  • Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (education incentive pay applies; proof required)
  • Military service — veterans may be eligible for preference points per state law

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly pay range (as listed in source): $45.16 – $65.53 per hour
  • Entry‑level hiring sign‑on bonus: $10,000 (as listed)
  • Special assignment pay: eligible members with 12 months in approved specialty units receive 5% additional pay
  • Education incentive pay:
    • Associate’s degree — 2.0% increase
    • Bachelor’s degree — 4.0% increase
    • Master’s degree — 6.0% increase
  • Per pay period, an additional $5 is provided for legal defense fund insurance
  • Benefits (varies by appointment type and bargaining unit): medical, vision, dental, paid leave, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, long‑term disability, retirement (state retirement systems), deferred compensation

Selection Process & Testing

This recruitment is continuous and will create an eligibility list for current and future openings.

Key steps (applicants must complete earlier steps before advancing):

  • Public Safety Testing: written exam and Physical Ability Test (PAT). Minimum written score: 70%; PAT must be PASS.
  • Application review — incomplete applications will not pass review
  • Oral interview (structured panel; minimum passing score 70%)
  • Background investigation: neighborhood check, references, employment history, criminal/driving/financial checks (from high school onward)
  • Post‑offer requirements: medical exam, psychological evaluation, polygraph, drug screen, additional physical testing as required

Preference points and veteran scoring are applied per applicable state law and agency policy.


Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This role requires regular exposure to varied settings (patrol vehicles, indoor/outdoor environments) and may include:

  • Exposure to extreme weather and physically hazardous situations (violent individuals, weapons, crime scenes)
  • Physical exertion: running, climbing, crawling, lifting (can exceed 100 lbs.), dragging, restraining persons
  • Visual and auditory standards: hearing within specified audiometric limits; vision correctable to required standards
  • Irregular/shift work; potential disruption of sleep patterns
