Work Location: Hybrid — Lansing, MI (combination of in-office, remote, and field work)
Salary Range: $55,000–$65,000 per year

What You’ll Do

The role supports nonpartisan democracy and civic engagement programs across Michigan. Key responsibilities include:

  • Democracy & civic engagement program support

    • Help develop and execute voter education, voter registration, election protection, democracy defense, voting rights, and civic participation initiatives.
    • Assist with project plans, timelines, deliverables, and performance measures; report on progress and challenges.
    • Monitor developments in election administration and civic participation and identify engagement opportunities.
  • Research, policy, and program support

    • Conduct legal, policy, and programmatic research on voting rights, election administration, redistricting, proportional representation, and related reforms.
    • Draft research memoranda, briefing materials, presentations, training materials, and reports.
    • Translate complex legal, policy, and data-driven information into clear, accessible materials for partners and the public.
    • Track program outputs, outcomes, and lessons learned to support evaluation.
  • Coalition and partnership engagement

    • Build and maintain relationships with voting-rights, civil-rights, legal, academic, community, faith-based, and other organizations.
    • Participate in coalition meetings and working groups; ensure follow-through on assigned action items.
    • Represent the Confidential Client in external meetings as assigned and coordinate shared priorities with partners.
  • Labor and affiliate engagement

    • Engage affiliated unions, central labor councils, constituency groups, and other labor organizations in nonpartisan democracy work.
    • Develop relationships with affiliate leaders, staff, and members to recruit participation in voter education and election protection programs.
    • Attend affiliate meetings, trainings, and events as needed.
  • Election protection and volunteer coordination

    • Recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteers for Election Protection, Democracy Defense, and related programs.
    • Build volunteer recruitment partnerships with unions, universities, community and faith-based organizations, legal partners, and others.
    • Maintain volunteer records, assignments, communications, and training completion tracking.
    • Support rapid-response coordination during elections and other high-activity periods.
  • Administration, communications, and cross-division coordination

    • Coordinate administrative, financial, operational, technology, communications, purchasing, and contracting needs with shared-service teams.
    • Work with communications staff to support public education, volunteer recruitment, digital content, and program materials.
    • Maintain program records, calendars, contact lists, trackers, meeting notes, and research files.
    • Collaborate across organization divisions on appropriate initiatives consistent with the Labor Foundation's 501(c)(3) purposes.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, labor studies, communications, community organizing, or related field — or equivalent professional experience.
  • Entry-level candidates encouraged; related experience preferred. Training provided.
  • Strong critical-thinking and analytical skills; ability to research and synthesize complex information.
  • Self-starter with initiative, intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and accountability.
  • Quick learner who adapts to new subject matter and changing priorities.
  • Strong research, writing, verbal communication, organizational, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build trust across diverse stakeholders and move collaborative work from discussion to action.
  • Strong time-management skills; able to manage multiple projects and deadlines with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently in a hybrid environment and collaborate with colleagues, partners, and volunteers.
  • Willingness to travel regularly within Michigan and work evenings/weekends during elections, trainings, and events.
  • Commitment to nonpartisan civic engagement, economic and social justice, and workers’ rights.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following is helpful but not required:

  • Labor, community organizing, civic engagement, advocacy, public policy, voting rights, or election protection work.
  • Conducting research and preparing reports, presentations, memoranda, or training materials.
  • Building relationships with community, labor, legal, academic, or faith-based stakeholders.
  • Recruiting, training, coordinating, or supporting volunteers.
  • Working collaboratively on multi-partner projects.
  • Familiarity with Michigan’s civic, governmental, electoral, or labor landscape.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $55,000–$65,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
