Overview

The confidential client is seeking a Data Systems Software Engineer to design, build, and operate scalable data-processing and data-center systems that support environmental and Earth-sciences research. You will help develop modular software, data workflows, and operational tooling for large historical and streaming datasets on hybrid HPC and cloud platforms. The work supports scientific data centers and analysis tools used by research communities.

What You’ll Do

  • Work independently and collaboratively to research, develop, and operate back-end data analysis workflows and processes at scale in an HPC environment.
  • Design and implement scalable solutions for processing large volumes of historical and streaming environmental data on hybrid HPC and cloud platforms.
  • Apply parallel computing paradigms and tools, and integrate with HPC schedulers (e.g., SLURM), containers, and orchestration platforms.
  • Configure, deploy, and maintain containerized services in Docker and Kubernetes environments using GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
  • Write and maintain scripts and production code (Python, Bash, Perl as needed) for automation, data processing, and system management.
  • Produce clear documentation for systems and applications, including operational run-books and developer-facing guides.
  • Continuously learn and apply new technologies to meet program needs and improve system reliability and performance.
  • Align with core values (impact, integrity, teamwork, safety, service) and help foster an inclusive, respectful workplace.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of progressive systems engineering or software engineering experience in a Linux environment.
  • Experience with full-stack system development (design, deployment, operations).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python and Bash (Perl experience is a plus).
  • Hands-on experience using CI/CD pipelines and deploying Docker containers.
  • Experience managing a Kubernetes container environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Willingness to learn new tools and adapt to evolving technical requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Python-based services and PostgreSQL.
  • Prior experience working in an HPC environment (SLURM, PBS).
  • Familiarity with frontend frameworks/tools such as Vue.js and FastAPI (for integrated tooling).
  • Experience with virtualization and container infrastructure (e.g., VMWare).
  • Self-starter who works well independently and in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced research setting.

Special Requirements

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Employment requires completion of federal credentialing and eligibility checks: a Real ID-compliant form of identification and the ability to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card per HSPD-12 and DOE requirements. Final employment is contingent on a favorable federal background investigation (Tier 1).
  • The background check includes a declaration regarding recent illegal drug activities. Federal policy may restrict applicants who used marijuana or cannabis derivatives within the past year regardless of state laws.
  • Resumes submitted by third-party agencies will not be accepted.
