What You’ll Do

The confidential client is hiring a Data Scientist to join the Science Office Data Science team. You will turn environmental data into rigorous, defensible analysis and clear visuals that support organizational priorities. Typical responsibilities include:

• Conduct statistical analysis of environmental data (pollution, species counts, climate measures) and produce findings that can withstand review from regulators, courts, and external stakeholders.
• Apply modern statistical methods such as regression, hypothesis testing, and time-series analysis to detect trends and quantify uncertainty.
• Lead discrete projects from intake through delivery, coordinating timelines, deliverables, stakeholder review, and quality assurance.
• Clean, validate, and manage datasets to ensure accuracy and credibility.
• Build maps, dashboards, and interactive visualizations using ArcGIS Online, Tableau, or similar platforms.
• Produce user-facing products: interactive maps, dashboards, graphics, factsheets, and presentations tailored to specific audiences.
• Translate technical results into clear written and verbal messages for non-technical audiences and collaborate with advocates, litigators, scientists, and external partners.
• Research, collect, and synthesize relevant information to support data requests.
• Participate in Science Office meetings and activities as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in statistics, data science, environmental science, or a related field — or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• 2–4 years of related experience in data analysis and research (experience in environmental policy or advocacy is preferred).

• Proficiency with R or Python for statistical analysis.

• Experience with ArcGIS or Tableau for mapping and visualization.

• Familiarity with SQL and common data-wrangling workflows.

• Strong writing and verbal communication skills; ability to explain technical results to non-expert audiences.

• Ability to manage multiple projects on tight deadlines and work both independently and collaboratively.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

• Advanced coursework or applied experience in modern statistical methods.
• Prior experience producing visuals and analyses used in policy or advocacy contexts.
• Working knowledge of key energy and environmental policies.
• Advanced Excel skills.

Location & Schedule

• Job location: Washington, Washington, D.C.
• Hybrid work model: onsite presence required approximately 8 days per month.
• Travel: up to ~20% annually.
• This position is part of the bargaining unit represented by The Washington Baltimore News Guild (WBNG / The Newsguild-CWA Local 32035).

Compensation & Benefits

• Salary range: $90,000 to $100,000 per year (salary commensurate with skills and experience).
