Overview

Confidential client is seeking a Data Scientist to support Medicaid claims and encounter data analysis for fraud, waste, and abuse investigations. This role focuses on querying complex healthcare datasets, identifying anomalous patterns, and supporting investigative teams with data-driven findings. The position is based in Olympia, WA with flexible/hybrid telework options.


What You’ll Do

  • Perform research, querying, and analysis of complex Medicaid claim and encounter data to identify trends and anomalies.
  • Review financial, billing, and healthcare records to surface patterns indicative of fraud, waste, or abuse.
  • Design, write, and execute data queries using SQL and related tools.
  • Implement statistical models and algorithms to detect potential fraud schemes and prioritize leads.
  • Analyze utilization and service claim data to respond to data requests from investigators and legal teams.
  • Research Medicaid billing rules, program guides, and medical coding systems (CPT, HCPCS, ICD-9/ICD-10) to interpret irregularities.
  • Document analyses, maintain reproducible workflows, and present findings clearly to multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in informatics, data science, mathematics, computer science, statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 1 year performing data science or informatics work (querying, analysis, or applied modeling).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including complex spreadsheets, formulas, and macros.
  • Practical experience writing and optimizing SQL queries.
  • Basic familiarity with medical coding and terminology (CPT, HCPCS, ICD-9, ICD-10) and medical billing concepts.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Access.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret healthcare billing and financial records.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work with investigative/legal stakeholders.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. Candidates based in or willing to work in Olympia, WA are preferred given coordination with onsite teams and state-specific data access requirements.
