Role Overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Data Scientist to support data integration, engineering, and analytics efforts in a HIPAA-regulated environment. This is a full-time engagement (12+ months) based in Indianapolis, IN. The role focuses on building and maintaining batch and streaming data pipelines, dimensional models, and secure data access patterns using Azure Databricks, PySpark, Delta Lake, and Azure Synapse Analytics.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist with the data technology strategy and resolve data integration challenges including data quality, stewardship, and event-based integration.
  • Design, build, and maintain batch and streaming data pipelines in Azure Databricks using PySpark, Spark SQL, and Delta Lake following a medallion (bronze/silver/gold) lakehouse architecture.
  • Develop, load, and tune dimensional data models and SQL workloads in Azure Synapse Analytics (dedicated and serverless SQL pools) to support reporting and dashboards.
  • Orchestrate and monitor data workflows using Databricks Workflows/Jobs and Synapse or Azure Data Factory pipelines, including scheduling, alerting, and failure recovery.
  • Apply data governance and security controls (Unity Catalog permissions, RBAC, row/column-level security, data masking) to protect PHI/PII and meet HIPAA and agency policy requirements.
  • Participate in requirements gathering, solution reviews, documentation, and explain technical designs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provide training and technical support for project teams and contribute to documentation, diagrams, and clean, commented code.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks, PySpark, Spark SQL, and Delta Lake.
  • Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics (dedicated or serverless SQL pools) or equivalent analytical data warehouse platforms.
  • Familiarity with orchestrating pipelines using Databricks Workflows, Azure Data Factory, or Synapse pipelines.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience building dimensional models for reporting.
  • Awareness of data governance, security, and privacy practices, especially handling PHI/PII under HIPAA.
  • Clear communication skills to work with solution leads, architects, analysts, and project managers.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience implementing a medallion (bronze/silver/gold) lakehouse architecture.
  • Familiarity with Unity Catalog or similar data catalog/permission tools.
  • Prior work with healthcare data or other highly-regulated data domains.
  • Experience tuning performance in Synapse or similar MPP systems.
