Role Overview
Confidential Client is hiring a Data Platform Software Engineer to help build and operate database provisioning, configuration, and fleet-wide maintenance tooling that runs in production at scale. You will work on systems used by operations teams and automated workflows to deploy and maintain relational databases reliably and safely.
What You’ll Do
- Build and enhance provisioning and operations tooling (CLI and services) that deploy, configure, monitor and maintain PostgreSQL/MariaDB fleets in production.
- Own well-scoped features end-to-end: design, implementation, automated testing, and delivery.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code and participate in code and design reviews.
- Automate operational tasks across a large database fleet: configuration management, scheduled maintenance, monitoring, and automated remediation.
- Investigate production incidents (database crashes, backup/restore failures, performance regressions) and contribute to root-cause analysis from logs, traces, and system metrics.
- Collaborate with operations, support, and partner engineering teams to translate requirements and feedback into product improvements.
- Contribute to runbooks, operational documentation, and team knowledge sharing.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
- Hands-on experience with Linux systems and interest in learning system internals.
- Familiarity with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB) and a desire to learn how they operate in production.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a curiosity about how distributed systems fail and recover.
- Clear communicator comfortable working with distributed teams across time zones.
- Practical experience with source control and CI/CD tools (Git, Jenkins, or similar).
- Programming experience in Ruby, Python, Go or similar languages, plus shell scripting. (Ruby preferred but not required.)
Nice to Have
- Experience with configuration management (e.g., Puppet, Ansible), backups/replication/high-availability for databases.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes and fleet orchestration.
- Exposure to AI-assisted developer tools or experience thinking about integrating AI into engineering workflows.
- Prior experience building CLI tools and distributed maintenance services.
Qualifications
- Typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to work in a hybrid model out of an office location in California or potentially remote, depending on role assignment and eligibility.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range for roles in this location: $139,700 - $216,500 (USD) — actual pay will vary based on candidate qualifications, competencies, and work location.
- Additional compensation may include equity (where applicable), variable/incentive pay, and benefits such as health plans, flexible spending accounts, 401(k) with match, employee stock purchase plan, flexible time away, and family leave programs.
- Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants who require them during the hiring process.
