Summary

Confidential Client is hiring multiple levels in a Current Use Planning series: Assistant Planner, Associate Planner, and Senior Planner. These are full‑time, public‑sector planning roles focused on current use (critical area) planning, permitting, code interpretation, SEPA review, public hearings, and related land‑use duties. Placement at a specific level depends on education, experience, and demonstrated competency.


What You’ll Do

  • Review and analyze community development proposals; interpret complex codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Administer the Washington State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) and local environmental codes; assist with Environmental Impact Statements and related studies.
  • Prepare written staff reports and deliver oral presentations to Hearing Examiner, Planning Commission, and Board of Commissioners.
  • Represent the Confidential Client at meetings with agencies, stakeholder groups, and the public.
  • Assist with drafting zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan amendments related to land use.
  • Monitor permitted projects for compliance; conduct site visits as needed.
  • Support Long Range Planning work including GMA Comprehensive Plan development and maintenance.
  • Help develop and expand GIS capabilities: create maps, graphics, reports, and presentations.
  • Coordinate and, for Senior roles, supervise or mentor Associate/Assistant Planners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of planning and zoning principles, environmental and land use laws (including the Washington Growth Management Act and SEPA).
  • Understanding of coastal biological/geologic processes and wetland environments.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills; experience with public presentations and hearings.
  • Ability to exercise independent professional judgment and remain objective with competing stakeholder interests.
  • High standards for accuracy and attention to detail in reports and permitting actions.
  • Comfortable with rapid change and working under stress; able to relate professionally to varied personality styles.
  • Self-motivated, able to manage competing deadlines and concurrent tasks.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information where required.
  • Proficient with word processing and common planning-related computer applications; GIS experience preferred.

Education, Experience & Certifications

At the Confidential Client’s discretion, equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Assistant Planner

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban/regional planning, geography, or related environmental sciences AND related professional planning experience.

Associate Planner

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban/regional planning, geography, or related environmental sciences AND three years of related professional planning experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in a related field AND one year of related experience. PAB‑accredited program graduates are desirable.

Senior Planner

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban/regional planning, geography, or related environmental sciences AND five years of related professional planning experience (AICP preferred); OR
  • Master’s degree AND three years related experience (AICP preferred). PAB‑accredited program graduates are desirable.

Salary & Employment Type

  • This posting includes hourly salary ranges by level:
    • Assistant Planner: $28.84 – $30.31 per hour
    • Associate Planner: $31.47 – $33.06 per hour
    • Senior Planner: $34.08 – $35.80 per hour
  • Employment type: FULL_TIME
