What You’ll Do
The Confidential Client is seeking a Consultant, Casualty Claims to manage a portfolio of moderately complex casualty claims from intake to resolution. This role is based in Farmington Hills, MI and follows a hybrid work schedule (typically two days in the office). Key responsibilities include:
- Manage a caseload of moderately complex casualty claims through investigation, evaluation and resolution.
- Conduct thorough investigations to assess liability and evaluate damages using established procedures.
- Negotiate settlements within delegated authority and document settlement rationale.
- Collaborate with underwriting, legal teams, and external partners to ensure comprehensive claim handling.
- Identify and refer potentially suspicious claims to Special Investigations when appropriate.
- Apply comparative negligence rules and state-specific regulations to claim determinations.
- Set reserves, authorize payments, and exercise sound financial judgment within authority levels.
- Use claims systems and data tools to improve processing efficiency and accuracy.
- Maintain clear, professional communication with claimants, attorneys, vendors and internal stakeholders.
- Keep detailed, compliant documentation of claim activities and decisions.
- Support subrogation, risk transfer and recovery efforts.
- Mentor and coach entry-level claim handlers, sharing best practices and lessons learned.
- Participate in training to maintain required adjuster licensing and stay current with industry standards.
- Manage indemnity, medical, and basic arbitration/mediation components with supervisory support.
What You’ll Need
Minimum qualifications and skills required to be successful in this role:
- Associate degree required; bachelor’s degree preferred (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- 1–4 years of relevant casualty claims handling experience.
- Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, required Michigan adjuster licenses.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent claim investigations and assessment of contractual indemnification.
- Strong negotiation skills and experience resolving moderately complex claims.
- Proficiency with standard office software (MS Office) and basic claims systems navigation.
- Strong analytical reasoning, organization, and documentation skills.
- Customer-focused communication style; ability to handle sensitive conversations with empathy and professionalism.
- Familiarity with insurance products and casualty claim processes.
- Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively.
Preferred / Differentiators
- Prior experience with Assigned Claims Plans or Michigan-specific claims handling.
- Exposure to subrogation and recovery processes.
- Experience mentoring or supervising less-experienced claim handlers.
- Comfort using claims analytics or data tools to inform decisions.
