Overview
Confidential Client is hiring an entry-level Construction Inspector Trainee (Transportation) to support VDOT, locality, and Design‑Build roadway and bridge projects serving the Miller Park, VA area (VDOT Lynchburg District). This is a field-focused, full‑time contract opportunity with hands‑on training, certification support, and growth into inspection and materials testing roles.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee contractor operations to confirm compliance with contract documents, design specifications, and permits
- Coordinate inspection activities across multiple active work crews
- Track daily work quantities and complete detailed inspection documentation
- Prepare daily field reports, monthly estimates, and as‑built sketches/drawings
- Conduct field inspections and materials testing; maintain accurate testing logs
- Review and validate contractor pay estimates
- Support project engineers with field data, sketches, and reports
- Maintain project diaries and document deficiencies or field issues
- Review contractor schedules (CPM and monthly updates)
- Communicate regularly with engineers, owners, and stakeholders to maintain alignment
- Apply a proactive, solution‑oriented approach throughout construction phases
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and technical drawings
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Willingness to work nights and overtime as required by project assignments
- Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel; basic computer literacy required
Certifications & Training (Required / Supported)
Confidential Client expects trainees to obtain or be willing to obtain the following:
- VDOT materials certifications:
- Asphalt (Asphalt Field Level I & II)
- Soils and Aggregate Compaction
- Pavement Marking
- VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety or ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS)
- WACEL or ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior VDOT inspection experience
- Additional VDOT certifications: GRIT, Slurry, Surface Treatment
- DEQ Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector and/or DEQ Stormwater Management Inspector
- OSHA-10 Construction Safety
- Experience with e‑Construction platforms (PlanGrid, e‑Builder, Procore, Fieldwire, etc.)
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
This is an outdoor, field‑intensive role. Essential functions include:
- Walking and navigating rough or uneven terrain (mud, rocks, steep slopes, wooded areas)
- Climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles as needed
- Bending, twisting, kneeling, and extended standing or sitting
- Repetitive hand/wrist motions
- Lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs and carting loads up to 100 yards
- Driving to/from project sites (round trips may exceed 120 miles)
- Working at heights exceeding 6 feet; ability to wear and inspect a safety harness
- Exposure to a range of weather conditions and occasional noisy or confined spaces
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation range: $45,000 — $85,000 annually (good‑faith estimate; final offer will reflect experience, certifications, and location)
