Role Overview
Confidential Client is hiring a Composites Design Engineer - Advanced Concepts based in Raleigh, NC. This role supports aircraft development and helps build reusable composite design methods and product-definition capability under senior technical direction. Hybrid candidates may be considered; occasional travel to South Burlington, VT for in-person work may be required.
What You’ll Do
- Create laminate and core layouts, ply concepts, local details, joints, producibility features, and associated design documentation.
- Produce and maintain composite layouts, ply/core definitions, detail studies, and engineering drawings.
- Coordinate design activities with Senior Composites, Structures Design, Stress, Manufacturing, and NDT teams.
- Support Program Director / Chief Engineer by expanding product-definition capacity while preserving senior oversight of allowables and critical decisions.
- Document assumptions, interfaces, decisions, risks, and verification needs in configuration-controlled engineering records.
- Communicate status, unresolved issues, and recommended actions clearly in technical and program reviews.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, mechanical, materials, manufacturing engineering, or a related engineering discipline; 0–3 years of relevant experience. Composite coursework, internships, research, hands-on fabrication, or substantial design projects may satisfy the experience expectation.
- Working knowledge of composite materials and processes, laminate and sandwich construction, bonded and mechanically fastened joints, engineering drawings, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Ability to create or modify 3D CAD and product definition, incorporate manufacturing and inspection constraints, and document design assumptions. Proficiency in CATIA/3DEXPERIENCE or another production CAD system is acceptable.
- Introductory familiarity with damage tolerance, environmental durability, NDT, and repair considerations.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work across disciplines.
- Must be a US Person to be considered for the role.
Preferred / Above-and-Beyond Qualifications
- Experience supporting a new aircraft, transport-category aircraft, or another safety-critical complex product.
- Experience taking work from concept through design review, build, integration, test, or certification evidence.
- Experience improving engineering methods, automation, data quality, or cross-functional execution.
- Hands-on fabrication or test experience is a plus.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Regular computer work plus access to office, laboratory, manufacturing, hangar, aircraft, and test environments.
- Occasional travel, hands-on hardware support, and nonstandard test hours may be necessary.
- Use of required personal protective equipment in manufacturing and test areas.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $85,000—$115,000 USD (good-faith estimate).
- Employment type: Full time (Contractor options listed depending on role assignment).
