About the Role

Confidential Client is seeking an entry-level Compliance Officer I to perform field inspections and investigations to enforce laws, rules and regulations related to commercial weighing and measuring devices, electronic price scanning systems, package net contents, licensing and related programs. This full-time role requires extensive travel across assigned municipalities, on-the-job training from senior officers, and direct interaction with regulated businesses and local officials.


What You’ll Do

  • Enforce laws, rules and regulations governing weights and measures and electronic price scanning systems in retail and other regulated locations.
  • Conduct on-site inspections, verify measurements, collect and preserve evidence, and prepare clear, factual reports.
  • Review and investigate complaints or alleged violations; determine appropriate next steps or referrals under direction of senior staff.
  • Issue citations and recommend corrective actions; maintain accurate records and case documentation.
  • Respond to public and stakeholder inquiries about regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Provide pre-certification assistance and training to municipal sealers of weights and measures as needed.
  • Coordinate with agency personnel and local officials to support compliance activities and program goals.
  • Recommend policy or procedural improvements based on field observations.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet ONE of the following:

  • At least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in investigatory, law enforcement, or regulatory administration work; OR
  • An equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions listed below.

Substitutions:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher may be substituted for the required experience. Education will be prorated based on the proportion completed.

Additional minimum requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Massachusetts or reciprocal-state driver’s license in good standing and have access to an automobile.
  • Must submit a driving record from the Registry of Motor Vehicles prior to hire.
  • Ability and willingness to take the State Weights & Measures Certification Test within six months of hire.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb and perform inspections at regulated establishments.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across assigned municipalities.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of general report-writing methods and basic investigatory practices.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude sufficient to assess equipment at gas stations, grocery stores and similar sites.
  • Familiarity with investigative techniques and evidence collection.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare concise reports and explain regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to work independently within established procedures and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and willingness to learn electronic databases and licensing software.
  • Multilingual skills are preferred.
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholders and encourage voluntary compliance.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Estimated salary: $59,869 per year (estimated).
