Role overview

Confidential Client is hiring a Compensation Specialist to support total rewards programs and pay administration. This full-time role is based in Detroit, MI and supports compensation studies, job evaluations, salary analyses, classification reviews, and pay policy compliance. The role reports to the Senior Director, Total Rewards (or equivalent) and works closely with HR, leadership, and department managers.

  • Salary range: $60,000 — $70,000 per year

What you’ll do

  • Support the development, administration, analysis, and maintenance of compensation programs that promote internal equity and market competitiveness.
  • Collect and manage compensation survey data; maintain survey schedules and vendor/participant contacts.
  • Conduct job analyses, job evaluations and classification reviews to recommend appropriate job families, salary grades and FLSA status.
  • Prepare compensation metrics, reports, and models to inform pay decisions and workforce planning.
  • Maintain compensation systems, salary tables, and related databases.
  • Consult with HR partners and hiring managers on position management, salary placement, and pay practices.
  • Monitor legislative and market changes affecting compensation and recommend updates to policies or practice.
  • Assist with annual pay program administration and provide analytical support for ad-hoc compensation projects.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive employee and compensation information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources, analytics, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1–2 years of compensation-related experience, internship experience, or HR experience with compensation exposure.
  • Familiarity with FLSA, Equal Pay Act principles and general compensation administration concepts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to interpret market data and produce actionable recommendations.
  • Proficiency with MS Excel; experience building models, reports and tools. Experience with HRIS/compensation systems is a plus.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and relationship management ability.
  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification preferred but not required.

Preferred skills & attributes

  • Prior experience supporting compensation programs in a medium to large organization.
  • Experience with salary survey participation and vendor management.
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple, moderately complex projects to completion.
  • Experience working in higher education, public sector, or similarly structured organizations is a plus.
