Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Evening and Night Shift
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs and oversees clinical laboratory testing, quality control, and instrumentation maintenance primarily during evening and night shifts at the Confidential Client. This role requires adherence to strict certification standards, application of advanced laboratory science principles, and collaboration with healthcare teams to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic results in a fast-paced environment.

What You’ll Do
This Clinical Laboratory Scientist (evening & night shifts) will perform professional clinical laboratory testing and related duties to support patient care. Typical responsibilities include:
- Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing across assigned laboratory sections on evening/night shift schedules
- Follow laboratory policies, procedures, and safety protocols; wear required protective clothing and PPE
- Execute quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA) procedures, and document results accurately
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform routine preventive maintenance on laboratory instrumentation
- Analyze and interpret laboratory data; use independent technical judgment to escalate complex or unfamiliar issues
- Participate in performance improvement activities, proficiency testing, and documentation for compliance
- Provide clear communication and collaborate with clinicians, laboratory staff, and other members of the healthcare team
- Supervise or support non-certified staff only as allowed by certification/qualification rules and local policy
- Maintain accurate records and follow chain-of-custody or other documentation procedures as required
Qualifications
Minimum requirements (grade placement and eligibility align with federal qualification standards where applicable):
- United States citizenship as required by the hiring authority (applicable federal restrictions may apply)
- Proficiency in spoken and written English (per applicable law and client policy)
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a directly related field
- Certification: One of the accepted certification routes below is required for certified placement:
- Generalist certification as an MLS (ASCP BOC) or AMT
- Generalist certification as an MT (ASCP BOR) or AMT
- Categorical or specialist ASCP/AMT certifications (accepted for higher-graded positions within relevant lab sections; not acceptable for CLS generalist positions unless explicitly allowed)
- Non‑certified applicants: temporary or entry-level (e.g., GS-07) appointments may be possible under specific routes that allow work toward certification; such appointments are limited in duration and subject to supervision and policy requirements
- Foreign education: foreign degrees must be evaluated as equivalent to U.S. accredited programs by an acceptable evaluation agency or supported by ASCP/AMT eligibility documentation
Grade-determining criteria (examples; final grade depends on experience/education and applicable client rules):
- GS-07: Meets basic education/certification route; no additional experience required
- GS-09: One year of creditable experience equivalent to GS-07 or a master’s / 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education; plus demonstrated KSAs such as QC/QA knowledge and ability to perform routine maintenance
- GS-11: One year of experience at GS-09 level OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (or Ph.D.); plus advanced KSAs such as informatics, independent judgment, instrumentation repair/troubleshooting, and performance improvement skills
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 1 year of experience as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a hospital or large clinical laboratory
- Experience with laboratory informatics, instrument troubleshooting, and QA program participation
- ASCP or AMT certification in the appropriate discipline
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Regular standing and walking between lab areas; prolonged periods sitting at microscopes or computers
- Manual dexterity and fine motor skills; visual acuity and color vision required for many tasks
- Intermittent moderate lifting (15–44 lbs) and light carrying (under 15 lbs)
- Possible stooping, kneeling, working in noisy environments; ability to concentrate in fast-paced settings
- Emotional stability to maintain self-control in difficult or stressful situations
- A physical examination prior to placement may be required
- This is a designated drug-testing position; incumbents are subject to random drug testing
Compensation & Schedule
- Employment type: Full time
- Salary range (as posted by the client): $50,460 — $97,087 per year (final grade and pay will be based on experience, qualifications, and internal grade placement; actual hiring grade may range GS-07 to GS-11)
- Evening and night shift schedules are required for this role
