Overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) to join their clinical laboratory team in Louisville, KY. This full-time role supports clinical testing across pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases and contributes to quality, instrument maintenance, and interdisciplinary care. Applicants may be tentatively selected pending completion of education or certification/licensure requirements; final hire is contingent on meeting those requirements.

What You’ll Do

• Perform accurate, timely clinical laboratory testing across assigned sections.
• Follow laboratory quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures.
• Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation; perform routine maintenance.
• Document results, interpret routine technical data, and escalate complex findings.
• Collaborate with healthcare team members and provide customer/patient education as needed.
• Support continuous process improvement and compliance with laboratory policies.
• Provide coverage and train less experienced staff as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following basic requirements:

• U.S. citizenship or eligibility per federal policy for public-sector roles.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university.
• Certification—one of the following generalist options is required:
  • Generalist certification as an MLS (ASCP BOC) or AMT, OR
  • Generalist certification as an MT (ASCP BOR) or AMT.
• Note: Categorical/specialist certifications are NOT acceptable for CLS generalist placements unless specifically applicable to the higher-graded role.

Exception for non-certified applicants:

• Candidates who meet documented routes to exam eligibility may be hired with the expectation of actively working toward certification.
• Temporary appointments for non-certified hires are limited in duration and require close supervision by a certified CLS.
• Failure to obtain required certification within the provided timeframe may lead to separation per policy.

Grade-level criteria (selection may be at GS-7 to GS-11):

• GS-7: Meets basic requirements; no additional experience required.
• GS-9: One year of experience equivalent to next lower grade OR a Master’s degree / 2 years of progressive graduate education in a related science. Demonstrated KSAs in QC/QA, equipment knowledge, teamwork, and test phases.
• GS-11: One year of experience equivalent to next lower grade OR a Ph.D. or 3 years of progressive graduate education in a related science. KSAs include advanced lab science principles, informatics, instrumentation troubleshooting, independent technical judgment, and complex interpretation.

Preferred / Valuable Skills

• Prior clinical laboratory experience in a hospital or diagnostic lab.
• Hands-on experience with laboratory information systems (LIS) and informatics.
• Experience in performance improvement, documentation for accreditation, or supervisory roles.
• ASCP/AMT active certification (MLS/MT) preferred.

Physical & Work Requirements

• Intermittent moderate lifting (15–44 lbs) and light carrying (<15 lbs).
• Use of hands/fingers; near vision correctable to 13–16 inches.
• Prolonged standing and walking (up to ~4 hours); repeated bending and occasional stooping/kneeling.
• Ability to distinguish basic colors and work in a noisy environment; hearing aids permitted.
• Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
• High cognitive function and emotional stability to work accurately under competing priorities.

Compensation & Schedule

• Employment type: Full time
• Salary range (provided by source): $60,452 - $116,312 per year
• Actual grade and pay will depend on selected grade (GS-7 through GS-11), qualifications, and experience.
