Position Overview

Confidential Client is seeking a Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) to perform and support clinical laboratory testing and quality processes. This role works across the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing, follows laboratory quality control/assurance procedures, maintains and troubleshoots instrumentation, and communicates results to the care team. The position is Permanent, Full time (GS-7 to GS-11; full performance level GS-11).

Key Responsibilities

• Perform and document pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical testing activities with accuracy and adherence to procedures
• Follow laboratory quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) practices
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory instrumentation
• Read, interpret, and apply written procedures and complex instructions
• Use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results
• Work collaboratively with other members of the health care team and support patient education and external relations when required
• Maintain required records and participate in performance improvement activities

Minimum Qualifications

• United States Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed only when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible)
• English Language Proficiency per 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f) — proficiency in spoken and written English required
• Education: Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university
• Certification: Candidates must meet one of the certification options below:
  • Generalist certification as an MLS by ASCP BOC or AMT
  • Generalist certification as an MT by ASCP BOR or AMT
  • Categorical or Specialist certification by ASCP or AMT
• Exception for non-certified applicants:
  • Applicants who do not yet hold valid certification may be hired and actively work toward certification if they meet qualifying routes (see Appendix A in client materials)
  • Non-certified applicants may be appointed temporarily under authority (may work under supervision; temporary appointments may not extend beyond 2 years)
  • Non-certified individuals must be supervised by a certified CLS and may be appointed only at entry level without promotion/transfer until certification is obtained

Grade-determining criteria (select examples — final grade/assignment determined by hiring manager):

• Clinical Laboratory Scientist, GS-7
  • No experience beyond basic requirements (entry-level; requires daily/direct supervision)
• Clinical Laboratory Scientist, GS-9
  • One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade OR Master’s degree (or 2 academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education) in medical technology or related science
  • KSAs: knowledge of clinical testing policies, QC/QA, equipment maintenance; ability to work in a team and follow instructions
• Clinical Laboratory Scientist, GS-11 (full performance level)
  • One year of creditable experience equivalent to GS-09 OR three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a Ph.D. in medical technology or related science
  • KSAs: independent clinical laboratory principles, QC/QA and performance improvement, informatics and data flow skills, advanced troubleshooting and interpretation, complex instruction application, and strong communication skills

• Regular and recurrent standing to perform procedures and tests
• Walking between laboratory areas and throughout the medical center
• Sitting at a microscope or computer; manual dexterity and use of both hands
• Visual acuity and color vision required for certain tasks
• Intermittent moderate lifting (15–50 pounds) and light carrying (<15 pounds)
• Intermittent stooping and kneeling
• Ability to read/comprehend ordinary type and screens
• Ability to hear (hearing aid permitted) and work in environments with background noise
• Work in a fast-paced setting requiring high cognitive function and emotional stability

• Salary range: $73,849 - $142,089 per year (grade-dependent)
