Role Overview
Confidential Client is seeking a Claim Representative I to join their workers compensation claims team. This entry-level role handles medical-only and indemnity claims, performs claim investigations, supports return-to-work efforts, establishes reserves within authority, and negotiates settlements. The position supports remote work while the authoritative work location is Lansing, MI.
What You’ll Do
- Verify workers compensation coverage for employers and injured employees
- Investigate reported injuries to determine compensability and causal relationship
- Manage medical bills and approve payments tied to the injury and treatment plan
- Establish timely and appropriate reserves within given authority based on claim exposure
- Facilitate return-to-work plans and coordinate with medical providers, employers, and vendors
- Negotiate settlements with attorneys or injured parties within delegated authority
- Conclude and close files in compliance with internal standards and state legislation
- Escalate complex files to management and collaborate on resolution strategies
- Manage outside vendors and maintain effective internal and external relationships
- Stay current on workers compensation statutes, case law, and rehabilitation best practices
Additional responsibilities as you progress (Claim Representative II/III)
- Administer complex or catastrophic claims and handle high-touch accounts
- Exercise independent judgment to settle cases prior to mediation or litigation
- Mentor junior team members and assist with audits and special projects
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Claim Representative I: Minimum 1 year relevant experience or completion of a claims trainee program
- Claim Representative II: 3 years workers compensation claims experience preferred
- Claim Representative III: 5 years workers compensation claims experience preferred
- Bilingual skills are preferred across levels
- Certification or progress toward claims certification is highly preferred and encouraged
Skills & Abilities
- Proficiency with computers and standard claims software
- Knowledge of medical and legal terminology related to workers compensation
- Understanding of workers compensation laws and jurisdictional regulations
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Effective customer service and negotiation skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise attention to detail
- Analytical problem solving and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- For higher levels: independent decision making, complex problem solving, mentoring ability
Working Conditions & Location
- Work primarily performed in an office or remote setting with minimal travel
- JobLocation: Lansing, MI (authoritative location); TELECOMMUTE status is allowed per role
- Employment subject to applicable state laws and regulations
Compensation
- Pay range: $48,200 - $80,750 (as listed by the Confidential Client). Final pay will depend on internal equity, candidate skills and experience, geographic location, and market factors.
