What You’ll Do

This role supports planning, design, and technical execution of civil engineering projects with a focus on site and land development. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Complete engineering assignments using standard practices, methods, and applicable agency requirements.
  • Assist in preparing design plans, specifications, and cost estimates that meet municipal, county, state, and federal standards.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, sketches, comparisons, and technical analyses to support design decisions.
  • Review drawings and submittals from vendors, clients, architects, and other engineers; recommend revisions to supervisors.
  • Research and apply relevant codes, regulations, and permitting requirements.
  • Document design options, findings, and technical results for supervisor review and project records.
  • Produce clear technical reports and correspondence summarizing studies and evaluations.
  • Conduct field visits to verify existing conditions, understand site constraints, and support design development.
  • Coordinate assigned tasks with designers, CAD technicians, surveyors, and engineers to ensure cohesive project delivery.
  • Communicate proactively with supervisors about workload, schedule changes, and scope adjustments.
  • Review completed work for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to standards prior to submission.
  • Perform occasional deliveries, pickups, or errands to support project operations.
  • Support hands-on project work including design calculations, plan preparation, and field observations.
  • Contribute to dependable client service through timely, accurate, and problem-solving work products.

Who You Are / Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 0–4 years of civil engineering experience (entry-level to early-career).
  • Engineer Intern (EI) certification or the ability to obtain EI within one year.
  • Strong knowledge of core engineering principles, practices, and mathematical applications.
  • Ability to perform engineering computations, cost estimates, and moderately complex design tasks.
  • Familiarity with engineering field instruments and standard office tools.
  • Basic proficiency with Civil 3D and AutoCAD; experience with OpenSite a plus.
  • Strong written communication skills for reports and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Professional communication skills with colleagues, clients, and supervisors.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

Additional Skills & Professional Interests

  • Interest in site development and land development project types.
  • Experience using Civil 3D and AutoCAD in academic or professional settings.
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary civil engineering design across diverse projects.
  • Motivation to pursue professional licensure and accrue qualifying experience under a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Desire to grow into roles with increased design ownership and project management responsibilities.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Contract-to-hire opportunity based in a local office of approximately ten professionals (civil engineers, drafters, and surveyors).
  • Fully onsite in Morris, IL — roughly 75% office-based design and technical work and about 25% field visits (varies by project).
  • Direct mentorship and training from a licensed Professional Engineer to support experience accrual toward licensure.
  • Team-oriented culture emphasizing collaboration, open communication, problem-solving, and dependable client service.
  • Day-to-day work performed with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and related design software and standard office tools.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay range: $33.65 - $36.06 per hour (Contract to Hire).
