What You’ll Do

Confidential Client is hiring full‑time, entry‑level Border Patrol Agents (BPA) to join a federal law‑enforcement mission. This is a career role focused on protecting national borders, deterring illicit activity, and safeguarding the public.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Detecting, questioning, and inspecting people and property to enforce immigration and customs laws
  • Conducting surveillance (including night operations with night‑vision/infrared equipment)
  • Interpreting tracks, marks, and other evidence of illegal entry
  • Performing farm/building/traffic/city/transportation checks and patrols
  • Operating a variety of assets: vehicles, off‑road vehicles, ATVs, motorcycles, horses, vessels, and watercraft
  • Making arrests and exercising sound judgment in the use of force as authorized by law and training

Salary & Benefits

Confidential Client offers competitive federal pay, benefits, and incentive programs.

  • Annual base salary for newly appointed BPAs (grade GL‑5 / GL‑7): $51,632 – $92,912 per year
  • Up to $20,000 recruitment incentive (first $10,000 after academy completion; remaining $10,000 for accepting prioritized locations)
  • Up to $40,000 in retention incentives over the first four years (total incentive potential up to $60,000)
  • Eligibility for federal benefits including medical/dental insurance, generous annual and sick leave, Thrift Savings Plan (retirement), and career‑ladder promotions (GL‑5 → GL‑7 → GL‑9 → GS‑11 → GS‑12)

Note on pay differentials: locality and pay reform adjustments may increase total compensation in certain duty locations (some roles are eligible for up to an additional ~25% under applicable pay rules).


Locations & Duty Assignments

Duty assignments are determined by operational needs and may include Southwest Border and other mission‑critical sectors. Candidates must be willing to relocate if required.

Common sectors and sample stations (not exhaustive):

  • Big Bend Sector — Presidio, Van Horn, Sierra Blanca, Sanderson, Alpine, Marfa
  • Del Rio Sector — Del Rio, Brackettville, Comstock, Eagle Pass, Carrizo Springs, Uvalde
  • El Paso Sector — El Paso area, Lordsburg (NM), Alamogordo, Deming, Santa Teresa
  • San Diego Sector — El Centro, Indio, Calexico, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach
  • Tucson Sector — Tucson, Nogales, Douglas, Ajo, Willcox
  • Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Yuma, Spokane, Grand Forks, Havre, Houlton, Swanton, and others

When offered a position, you will be asked to select preferred duty locations; however, final assignments are based on agency needs. Relocation may be required.


Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for GL‑5:

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating decision‑making, composure under stress, ability to learn rules and methods, and capacity to gather concise information; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree (4‑year) from an accredited college/university; OR
  • A combination of education and experience (evaluated from resume/transcripts)

Minimum qualifications for GL‑7:

  • One year of specialized experience demonstrating:
    • Sound judgment in the use of firearms
    • Effective, courteous interaction with the public in law‑enforcement contexts
    • Rapid information analysis and prompt decision‑making in enforcement settings
    • Experience in criminal code enforcement, corrections, security, military police, or similar
  • OR education substitution: bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate‑level coursework in a related field; OR a combination of experience and education (evaluated from resume/transcripts)

If you have prior or current federal civilian law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at higher grade levels (GL‑9 / GS‑11); refer to the applicable announcements.

Other mandatory requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years
  • Candidates must be referred for selection before their 40th birthday per applicable law (some exceptions apply for eligible veterans or current/previous federal LEOs)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required federal credentials and clearances

Training & Other Important Information

  • Successful applicants will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy (Artesia, NM) for approximately six months of intensive training covering immigration and nationality law, law enforcement operations, driver training, firearms, physical techniques, and language training.
  • Spanish language proficiency is helpful; the Academy provides training to improve Spanish language skills as needed.
  • This is a physical, mentally demanding law enforcement role that may include irregular hours, remote postings, and extended field deployments.
