Confidential Client is hiring entry-level Border Patrol Agents (BPA) for full-time, career federal law enforcement positions based in Stockton, CA and nearby duty locations. This is an entry-level, career-ladder role with training at the Border Patrol Academy (Artesia, NM), opportunities for progression through GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12, and eligible candidates may receive substantial recruitment and retention incentives.

What You’ll Do
Confidential Client’s Border Patrol Agents protect U.S. borders by preventing illegal entry, deterring illicit activity, and enforcing immigration/customs laws. Typical duties include:
- Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration/customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions
- Conducting surveillance from fixed and covert positions, including night operations with infrared optics
- Interpreting tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry
- Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks
- Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, ATVs, off-road vehicles, watercraft, and other government assets
Qualifications
You may qualify for GL-5 or GL-7 based on experience, education, or a combination:
- GL-5 (entry level) — One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, composure in stressful situations, ability to learn regulations/methods, and information-gathering; OR a bachelor’s degree; OR a combination of experience and education.
- GL-7 — One year of specialized experience that demonstrates firearms judgment, law-enforcement-related decision-making (arrests, enforcement, corrections, security, military police), and rapid information analysis; OR a bachelor’s with superior academic achievement OR one year of graduate-level study in a related field; OR a combination of experience and education.
- Candidates with military or prior law enforcement experience may qualify at GL-9 / GS-11 levels. Review supporting job announcements for advanced-grade consideration.
Preferred skills and attributes:
- Strong situational judgment and decision-making under stress
- Clear verbal and written communication skills in English; ability to learn Spanish (training provided) is expected for many assignments
- Physical readiness for demanding training and field duties
Other requirements
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Must have maintained primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
- Age: Candidates must be referred prior to their 40th birthday per law enforcement retirement provisions; some exceptions apply (e.g., current/previous federal civilian LEO service or Veterans’ Preference eligibilities).
- You will be required to pass the client’s pre-employment processes (background checks, medical, drug screening, fitness and firearms evaluations, and the BPA Entrance Exam).
- Duty assignments may include Southwest Border and prioritized locations; relocation may be required. Locality pay varies by assignment.
Benefits & Incentives

- Annual base pay varies by grade (GL-5/GL-7 $51,632 – $92,912). Locality pay and BPA pay reforms may increase total compensation (a fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional ~25% locality adjustment in certain areas).
- Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed BPAs may be offered up to $20,000 (first $10,000 after successful completion of the Academy; remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location).
- Retention Incentive: Up to $40,000 over the first four years for qualifying appointees.

Duty locations (examples)
Mission-critical and sector station locations include (not exhaustive): Presidio, Sierra Blanca, Sanderson, Comstock, Lordsburg, Freer, Hebbronville, Ajo, El Centro, Tucson, Yuma, San Diego sector locations, Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Del Rio, El Paso, and others across U.S. sectors. You will select preferences, but final assignment is based on operational needs.
