The Role
Confidential Client is recruiting entry-level Border Patrol Agents for full-time, career positions in federal law enforcement. This role offers academy training, a structured career ladder, federal benefits, and recruitment/retention incentives. Candidates with prior public safety, security, military police, or law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels.
What You’ll Do
- Detect, question, and inspect individuals and documents to determine citizenship and enforce immigration and customs laws.
- Maintain surveillance and perform apprehensions near borders; use covert observation techniques and night-vision equipment when required.
- Interpret tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry or contraband.
- Conduct farm checks, building checks, traffic stops, city patrols, and transportation checks.
- Patrol land and coastal boundaries using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and other government assets.
- Work collaboratively with a large federal law enforcement team to deter illicit activity and protect national security.
Qualifications
You may qualify for different entry grades depending on experience and education:
GL‑5 (Entry / Standard):
- One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making under stress, ability to learn regulations and techniques through training/on‑the‑job instruction, and the ability to gather information through questioning and observation; OR
- A bachelor’s degree (any field) from an accredited college/university; OR
- A combination of education and experience (evaluated from resume and transcripts).
GL‑7 (Specialized):
- One year of specialized experience showing the ability to:
- Make sound firearms judgments,
- Deal effectively and courteously in law enforcement matters,
- Rapidly analyze information and make prompt decisions (including arrest and enforcement duties); OR
- A bachelor’s with superior academic achievement or one year of relevant graduate study in a law‑enforcement related field; OR
- A combination of specialized experience and education (evaluated from resume and transcripts).
Note: Candidates with prior law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels (e.g., GL‑9, GS‑11). Qualifications will be verified during the application review.
Other Requirements & Training
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Applicants must have maintained primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
- Age/retirement rules: Candidates must be referred before reaching their 40th birthday per federal law enforcement retirement provisions, unless an exception applies (e.g., prior federal civilian law enforcement service or Veterans' Preference exceptions).
- Veterans may be eligible for special hiring authorities (e.g., VRA); check eligibility details when applying.
- Successful candidates attend an intensive Border Patrol Academy (approximately six months) covering law, operations, driver training, physical techniques, and firearms. Spanish language proficiency is beneficial; language training is provided during the Academy.
- All offers are subject to medical, fitness, background, and suitability standards required for federal law enforcement roles.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base salary range for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (GL‑5 / GL‑7): $51,632 – $92,912 (varies by grade and locality).
- Estimated midpoint shown on some listings: $65,132 per year (estimate).
- Recruitment incentives: up to $20,000 (e.g., $10,000 after academy completion + $10,000 for accepting prioritized locations where applicable).
- Retention incentives: eligible for up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years in some cases.
- Federal benefits: medical/dental insurance options, generous annual and sick leave, Thrift Savings Plan (federal retirement savings), and structured promotion/career-ladder opportunities.
Duty Locations & Relocation
- Duty assignments are determined by operational needs and may include the Southwest Border and other mission-critical sectors. Relocation may be required.
- Prioritized and mission-critical locations may include (but are not limited to): Presidio, Sierra Blanca, Sanderson, Comstock, Lordsburg, Freer, Hebbronville, Ajo, and multiple sector stations across AZ, CA, NM, TX, WA, MT, NY, ND, and VT.
- Location affects locality pay and assignment offers.
