What You’ll Do

As a Border Patrol Agent you will join a mission-focused team that protects the nation’s borders and enforces immigration and customs laws. Typical duties include:

Qualifications

Minimum requirements (applicants must meet one of the following for the GL-5 or GL-7 grade levels):

GL-5 (qualify if you have one of the following):

  • One (1) year of general work experience demonstrating ability to take charge, make sound decisions under stress, learn regulations/methods, and gather concise information through questioning and observation; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree (four-year) from an accredited college or university; OR
  • A combination of general work experience and college-level education (evaluated from resume and transcripts).

GL-7 (qualify if you have one of the following):

  • One (1) year of specialized work experience showing skills to make sound firearms judgments, deal effectively and courteously with people on law enforcement matters, analyze information rapidly, make prompt decisions and arrests after training (examples: criminal code enforcement, corrections, security, military police, other law enforcement); OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one full year of graduate-level study in a related field (criminal justice, homeland security, forensic studies, etc.); OR
  • A combination of experience and education (evaluated from resume and transcripts).

Candidates with prior federal civilian or military law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels (GL-9 / GS-11). Please consult the appropriate BPA announcement for advanced-grade eligibility.


Other legal & job requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Residency: Applicants must have had primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
  • Age: Candidates must be referred before reaching their 40th birthday per applicable law for law enforcement retirement provisions (exceptions may apply for certain veterans or prior federal law enforcement service).
  • Veterans’ preference and certain veteran hiring authorities may apply.
  • Mandatory background investigations, medical, psychological, and fitness-for-duty clearances are required.
  • Training: Successful hires attend approximately six months at the Border Patrol Academy (Artesia, NM). Spanish language proficiency is beneficial; language training is provided.
  • Employment is contingent on successful completion of all required exams, background checks, medical and physical screenings, and academy training.
