Why this role matters

This opportunity is for an entry-level Border Patrol Agent (BPA) position supporting a federal law enforcement mission. This is a full-time, career-track role with structured grade progression (GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12), comprehensive federal benefits, and eligible pay/incentives.


What You’ll Do

As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA) you will join a large federal law enforcement workforce and perform duties that may include:

  • Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions
  • Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers using surveillance, patrols, and interdiction techniques (day/night)
  • Interpreting tracks, marks and other physical evidence of illegal entry
  • Conducting farm checks, building checks, traffic and transportation inspections, and city patrols
  • Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, off‑road vehicles, motorcycles and other assigned assets
  • Working in teams and exercising sound judgment in high-pressure, dynamic situations

Salary & Benefits

  • Annual base salary for newly appointed BPAs (grade-dependent): $51,632 – $92,912 per year (GL‑5 / GL‑7 range)
  • Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 for newly appointed BPAs (first $10,000 paid after Academy completion; remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location)
  • Retention incentive: may qualify for up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years
  • Potential locality and pay adjustments: a fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per applicable pay reform provisions
  • Federal benefits package including health and dental insurance options, annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement)

Locations & Assignments

  • Duty assignments are mission-driven and may include Southwest Border locations and other sector stations across the U.S.
  • Candidates will be asked to select preferred mission-critical locations, but final assignment will be determined at time of offer based on operational need. Relocation may be required.
  • Examples of sectors/missions include (not exhaustive): Big Bend, Del Rio, El Paso, El Centro, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley, San Diego, Tucson, Yuma, and other domestic sector stations.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GL‑5 grade level if you meet one of the following:

  • One (1) year of general work experience demonstrating decision‑making, composure under stress, and ability to learn rules/methods on the job; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree (4‑year) from an accredited institution; OR
  • A combination of general work experience and college education (evaluated from resume/transcripts)

You may qualify at the GL‑7 grade level if you meet one of the following:

  • One (1) year of specialized work experience demonstrating:
    • Sound judgment and firearm use in a law enforcement context
    • Effective people skills and tact in law enforcement situations
    • Rapid analysis and decision making in enforcement or security roles (examples: criminal enforcement, corrections, military police, security)
  • OR a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (GPA/class standing/honor society) OR one year graduate-level coursework in a related field (criminal justice, homeland security, forensic studies, etc.); OR
  • A combination of qualifying experience and education (evaluated from resume/transcripts)

Other Requirements & Training

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
  • Age: Candidates must be referred to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday per federal law enforcement retirement provisions, unless an exemption applies (e.g., prior federal civilian LEO service or Veterans’ Preference eligibility).
  • Background & Fitness: Successful candidates must pass background checks, medical and physical fitness standards, and the BPA Entrance Exam as part of the selection process.
  • Formal Training: Selected candidates will attend the Border Patrol Academy (Artesia, NM) for approximately six months of intensive instruction (immigration law, driver/firearms training, physical techniques, Spanish language training, and operational procedures). Spanish language proficiency is beneficial; language training is provided.
  • Veterans: Veterans may be eligible for special hiring authorities (e.g., Veterans Recruitment Appointment) that can affect age restrictions and appointment procedures.
