Overview

Confidential Client is hiring Border Patrol Agents (BPA) at GL-5 / GL-7 grade levels for full-time, entry-level federal law enforcement roles based in Riverside, CA and other mission-critical locations across the U.S. This is a long-term, career-focused role that includes formal academy training, competitive base pay, federal benefits, and candidate incentives.


Salary & Benefits

Confidential Client offers:

  • Annual base salary (newly appointed BPA): GL-5 / GL-7 — $51,632 to $92,912 per year (range reflects grade/locality).
  • New-hire recruitment incentive — up to $20,000 (first $10,000 after academy completion; remaining for accepting prioritized locations).
  • Potential retention incentives — up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years for eligible hires.
  • Federal benefits including health, dental, retirement (Thrift Savings Plan), paid leave, and federal law enforcement locality pay adjustments (up to ~25% in certain locations).

Key Responsibilities

As a Border Patrol Agent you will:

  • Detect and question individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws; inspect documents and possessions.
  • Prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers using surveillance, observation, and field operations.
  • Interpret and follow tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry.
  • Conduct farm checks, building checks, traffic stops, city patrols, and transportation checks.
  • Patrol international boundaries, waterways, and terrain using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, motorcycles, and other government assets.
  • Work shifts that include day, night, weekends, and holidays depending on operational needs.

Who Should Apply / Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for GL-5:

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making under stress, ability to learn regulations/techniques, and skills in gathering information; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree; OR
  • A combination of education and experience (evaluated from resume/transcripts).

Minimum qualifications for GL-7:

  • One year of specialized experience showing ability to use firearms soundly, interact courteously in law enforcement matters, analyze information rapidly, and make prompt decisions (experience examples: criminal code enforcement, corrections, security, military policing); OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement OR one year graduate-level study in a related field; OR
  • A combination of specialized experience and education.

Note: Candidates with prior federal or military law enforcement experience may qualify at GL-9 or GS-11 levels (see client announcements for those postings).


Other Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
  • Age: Candidates must be referred before their 40th birthday per applicable federal law, unless exempt (e.g., certain prior federal law enforcement or veterans’ provisions).
  • Veterans may qualify for hiring authorities (VRA) and different age considerations.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation, medical, and fitness-for-duty exams is required.
  • Formal training: New hires will attend the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM (approx. 6 months) covering immigration law, law enforcement tactics, firearms, driver training, physical techniques, and Spanish language training as needed.
  • Role requires ability to communicate in English; additional Spanish proficiency is helpful and training is provided.

Duty Locations & Mobility

  • Duty assignments are determined by operational needs and may include Southwest Border locations and other mission-critical sectors nationwide. Candidates may be required to relocate.
  • Prioritized locations for recruitment incentives include but are not limited to: Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Lordsburg, Freer, Hebbronville, and Ajo.
  • A career ladder exists (GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12) with eligibility for promotion after successful completion of time-in-grade requirements.
