What You’ll Do
This role places you on the front line of federal border security for our confidential client (a federal law enforcement agency). As a Border Patrol Agent (BPA) at the GL‑5 / GL‑7 entry levels you will:
- Detect, question, and inspect persons and property to enforce immigration and customs laws.
- Conduct surveillance (including night operations with infrared equipment) and covert observation to detect illegal entry and smuggling.
- Interpret and follow physical evidence (tracks, marks) and perform farm, building, traffic, city, and transportation checks.
- Patrol borders and coastal waterways using varied government assets (vehicles, horses, ATVs, vessels, motorcycles, and off‑road equipment).
- Arrest, detain, and process persons when appropriate following required training and policy.
- Document incidents and collaborate with partners to support investigations and operational objectives.
Compensation & Benefits
The confidential client offers competitive federal pay, meaningful benefits, and substantial hiring incentives.
- Annual base salary (entry levels): $51,632–$92,912 per year (GL‑5 / GL‑7 range; locality pay may increase total pay depending on duty location).
- Recruitment Incentive: Up to $20,000 (first $10,000 paid after successful completion of the Academy; remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location where applicable).
- Retention Incentives: May qualify for up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years.
- Federal benefits: medical, dental, vision, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement savings).
- Potential for additional pay adjustments (e.g., up to ~25% locality or pay reform adjustments for certain locations) and a defined career ladder (GL‑5 → GL‑7 → GL‑9 → GS‑11 → GS‑12) based on time-in-grade and performance.

Qualifications
You may qualify at different grade levels based on experience and education.
GL‑5 (entry-level) — one of the following:
- One (1) year of general work experience demonstrating responsibility, sound decision‑making under stress, ability to learn regulations/methods, and information‑gathering skills; OR
- A bachelor’s degree (any field) from an accredited college or university; OR
- A combination of experience and college coursework (evaluated from your resume and transcripts).
GL‑7 — one of the following:
- One (1) year of specialized experience demonstrating skills such as sound judgment in the use of firearms, courteous and tactful interactions in law enforcement contexts, rapid analysis of information and prompt decision‑making in situations that may lead to arrests; OR
- A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (GPA or class standing/honor society), OR one full year of relevant graduate‑level study (criminal justice, homeland security, forensic technology, etc.), OR
- A combination of qualifying experience and education (evaluated from your resume and transcripts).
Note: Candidates with prior military or federal civilian law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels (GL‑9 / GS‑11). All qualifications are verified during the application process.
Other Requirements & Conditions
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
- Age: Applicants generally must be referred for selection before reaching their 40th birthday due to law enforcement retirement provisions; statutory exceptions apply (e.g., certain veterans or prior federal LEO service).
- Background & fitness: Candidates must meet extensive background, medical, psychological, and suitability checks required for federal law enforcement work.
- Training: Selected candidates attend approximately six months of intensive Academy training (Artesia, NM), including immigration and nationality law, firearms, defensive tactics, driver training, physical conditioning, and operations coursework. Spanish language proficiency is helpful; language training is provided at the Academy when required.
- Mobility & assignments: Duty assignments are determined by operational need at time of offer. Relocation may be required and accepted assignments may include Southwest Border or other mission‑critical locations.
