Overview

Confidential Client is recruiting entry-level Border Patrol Agents to join a federal law enforcement career path. This full-time, entry-level opportunity includes structured training, career progression, comprehensive federal benefits, and potential hiring/retention incentives (up to $60,000 total in certain situations). The position may require relocation and duty assignments at mission-critical locations.


Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual base pay for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (GL-5 / GL-7): $51,632 – $92,912 per year.
  • Estimated local benchmark shown: $74,120 per year (estimate).
  • Up to $20,000 recruitment incentive (paid in two parts: $10,000 after Academy completion; $10,000 for selecting a prioritized location).
  • Up to an additional $40,000 in retention incentives distributed over the first four years for qualifying hires.
  • Federal benefits including health, dental, retirement (Thrift Savings Plan), generous annual and sick leave, and long-term career ladder advancement (GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12).

Priority & Duty Locations

Important: duty assignments may include Southwest Border and other mission-critical locations. Relocation may be required. Priority locations and sector stations include (partial list):

  • Big Bend Sector — Presidio, Van Horn, Sanderson, Sierra Blanca, Alpine, Marfa
  • Buffalo Sector — Wellesley Island
  • Del Rio Sector — Del Rio, Brackettville, Comstock, Eagle Pass, Carrizo Springs, Uvalde
  • El Paso Sector — Alamogordo, Clint, Deming, El Paso, Fort Hancock, Las Cruces, Lordsburg, Santa Teresa
  • El Centro Sector — El Centro, Indio, Calexico
  • Tucson Sector — Ajo, Tucson, Nogales, Douglas, Casa Grande, Willcox
  • San Diego, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley, Yuma, Spokane, Swanton, Havre, Houlton sectors and others

Locality pay and pay reform provisions may increase fully trained BPA pay (up to an additional ~25% in some locations).


What You’ll Do (Typical Duties & Responsibilities)

  • Detect and interview individuals suspected of violating immigration or customs laws; inspect documents and possessions.
  • Prevent and interdict illegal entry and smuggling through surveillance and field operations (day/night).
  • Interpret tracks, marks, and physical evidence of illegal entry.
  • Perform farm, building, traffic, city patrols, and transportation checks.
  • Patrol boundaries and waterways using multiple platforms (vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, etc.).
  • Conduct arrests and participate in law enforcement operations after required training and certification.

Qualifications

You may qualify at different grade levels depending on experience and education.

GL-5 (entry qualifications — choose one):

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating responsibility, decision-making in stressful situations, learning capability, and information gathering; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university; OR
  • A combination of education and experience (evaluated from resume/transcripts).

GL-7 (specialized qualifications — choose one):

  • One year of specialized work experience showing ability to: exercise sound firearms judgment; deal tactfully with people on law enforcement matters; analyze information and make rapid decisions; perform arrests or related law enforcement duties in civilian, security, correctional, or military police roles; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (GPA/class standing/honor society) OR one full year of graduate-level study in a related field (criminal justice, homeland security, forensic technology, etc.); OR
  • A combination of qualifying experience and education (evaluated via resume/transcripts).

Note: Candidates with prior/current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels (GL-9 / GS-11) per specific announcements.


Other Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must have been a primary U.S. resident for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
  • Age requirement: must be referred for selection before reaching 40 years old per law enforcement retirement provisions; some exceptions apply (veterans, prior federal civilian LEO service).
  • Veterans’ Preference and Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) eligibility may apply; certain age restrictions may be waived.
  • Formal training: hires are detailed to the client’s training academy (approximately six months) for intensive instruction (immigration law, law enforcement procedures, driver training, firearms, physical techniques, etc.).
  • Spanish language skills are valuable; training to develop Spanish proficiency is provided at the academy.
