Overview

Confidential Client is hiring entry-level Border Patrol Agents (BPA) at GL-5 and GL-7 grade levels to join a federal law enforcement team protecting the nation’s borders and commerce. This is a full-time, career-track opportunity offering formal academy training, competitive base pay, excellent federal benefits, and significant recruitment and retention incentives (up to $60,000 total).


Salary & Benefits

  • Annual base salary range for newly appointed BPAs (GL‑5 / GL‑7): $51,632 – $92,912 per year.
  • Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 (first $10,000 after academy graduation; additional $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location).
  • Retention incentive: up to $40,000 paid over the first four years for qualifying agents.
  • Federal benefits include health/dental coverage options, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement savings).

Duty Locations

Duty assignments are determined at the time of offer and may include locations in the Southwestern U.S. and other mission-critical stations across multiple sectors. Relocation may be required.

Typical Duties

As a Border Patrol Agent, you will perform law enforcement functions to detect, deter, and interdict illegal entry and cross-border criminal activity. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws; inspecting documents and possessions.
  • Conducting surveillance, including covert night operations using specialized equipment.
  • Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry.
  • Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic and transportation inspections, and city patrols.
  • Patrolling borders and waterways using vehicles, horses, boats, off-road vehicles, ATVs, and motorcycles.

Who Should Apply / Qualifications

You may qualify for appointment at GL‑5, GL‑7 (or higher if you have prior law enforcement or military law enforcement experience). Typical qualification routes:

GL‑5 (one of the following):

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, learning ability, and information-gathering; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; OR
  • A combination of related experience and education (evaluated from your resume and transcripts).

GL‑7 (one of the following):

  • One year of specialized experience showing the ability to:
    • Make sound judgments and use firearms appropriately;
    • Interact courteously and effectively with the public in law enforcement matters;
    • Analyze information quickly and make prompt decisions, including arrests after training; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (GPA/honors/class standing) or one year of related graduate-level education; OR
  • A combination of experience and education (evaluated from your resume and transcripts).

Note: Candidates with prior federal or military law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels (GL‑9 to GS‑11). Documentation will be reviewed during application.


Other Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Must have been a primary U.S. resident for at least three of the last five years.
  • Age/retirement rules: selection typically must occur before 40th birthday per federal law enforcement retirement provisions; exceptions may apply for certain veterans or prior covered service.
  • Formal training: selected candidates attend an intensive Border Patrol Academy (approximately six months) covering immigration law, enforcement operations, driver and firearms training, physical techniques, and language training.
  • Language: ability to communicate in English is required; Confidential Client provides Spanish language instruction where needed.
