Salary & incentives

  • Annual base salary (newly appointed BPAs): GL-5 / GL-7 — $51,632 to $92,912 per year.
  • Estimated local pay shown: $86,259 per year (Adzuna estimate).
  • Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 (first $10,000 after Academy graduation; additional $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location).
  • Retention incentive: up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years.
  • Locality and pay-reform differentials may increase total pay (BPA Pay Reform Act may add up to ~25% locality pay in some areas).
  • This position is a federal, career ladder role with promotion eligibility after successful completion of required time-in-grade.

Location & assignments

  • Duty assignments are determined by operational needs and may include Southwest Border sectors and other mission-critical stations across the U.S.
  • Prioritized/possible duty locations include (examples): Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Lordsburg, Freer, Hebbronville, Ajo, and many additional sector stations nationwide.
  • Relocation to a duty assignment may be required. Locality pay varies by duty station.

What you’ll do

Typical Border Patrol Agent duties include:

  • Detect, question, and inspect people and possessions to determine citizenship and immigration status.
  • Deter and apprehend undocumented entrants and smugglers using surveillance, patrols, and investigative techniques.
  • Interpret tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry.
  • Conduct farm checks, building checks, traffic stops, city and transportation patrols.
  • Patrol international boundaries, waterways, and remote areas using a range of assets (vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles) and night-vision/infrared equipment as required.

Minimum qualifications

You may qualify at different grade levels depending on education and experience:

GL‑5 (Entry level) — one of the following:

  • One year of general work experience showing decision-making, composure under stress, ability to learn regulations/techniques, and information-gathering skills; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree (any field) from an accredited institution; OR
  • A combination of education and experience (evaluated via resume and transcripts).

GL‑7 — one of the following:

  • One year of specialized experience demonstrating law-enforcement-related judgment, firearms use, people skills, rapid information analysis, arrests, corrections/security, or similar responsibilities; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (GPA/honors/class standing) OR one full year of graduate-level study in a related field (criminal justice, homeland security, forensic studies, etc.); OR
  • A combination of relevant education and experience.

Notes:

  • Candidates with prior law enforcement or military police experience may qualify at GL‑9 or GS‑11 — refer to higher-grade announcements.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Residency: primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years is required.
  • Age: candidates must be referred before their 40th birthday per applicable federal retirement provisions, with lawful exceptions for certain prior federal law enforcement or veterans’ preference eligibilities.
  • Language & training: the role requires competency in English; Spanish proficiency is highly beneficial and training is provided at the Border Patrol Academy.

Training, evaluation & selection

  • New hires attend approximately six months of intensive Border Patrol Academy training covering immigration and nationality law, law enforcement procedures, firearms, driver training, physical techniques, and Spanish-language instruction.
  • Applicants are evaluated on submitted resumes, supporting documents (transcripts where applicable), and the BPA Entrance Exam.
  • Standard federal suitability checks (background investigation, fingerprinting, medical and fitness evaluations) apply to final candidates.
