What You’ll Do
You will serve as a frontline federal law enforcement officer performing a variety of field and investigative duties, including:
- Detect, question, and inspect individuals and documents to determine citizenship and compliance with immigration and customs laws
- Prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers using surveillance, night operations, and tactical observation techniques
- Interpret and follow tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry
- Conduct farm checks, building checks, traffic stops, city patrols, and transportation checks
- Patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles, depending on mission needs
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications (applicants may qualify at GL-5 or GL-7 depending on experience/education):
- U.S. citizenship and primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
- Ability to meet federal LEO physical and background standards (training includes firearms, driving, physical techniques, and law instruction)
- Strong decision-making and composure in stressful situations
- Willingness to complete intensive training at the Border Patrol Academy (approximately six months) and to develop Spanish language proficiency (training provided)
GL-5 eligibility (one of the following):
- One year of general work experience demonstrating responsibility, sound judgment, and ability to learn procedures; OR
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college; OR
- A combination of education and general work experience.
GL-7 eligibility (one of the following):
- One year of specialized work experience showing law enforcement-related judgment and skills (firearms judgment, enforcement activities, criminal code enforcement, corrections, security, military police, etc.); OR
- A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (class standing, GPA ≥ 3.0, or honor society) OR one year of relevant graduate-level coursework; OR
- A combination of specialized experience and education.
Note: Candidates with prior federal or military law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels (GL-9 / GS-11). Veterans’ preference and certain hiring authorities may affect age restrictions and appointment processes.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base pay range for newly appointed BPAs (GL-5 / GL-7): $51,632 — $92,912 per year (actual pay depends on grade and duty location)
- Recruitment incentive: Up to $20,000 (first $10,000 paid after Academy completion, additional $10,000 for accepting select prioritized locations)
- Retention incentive: Up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years for eligible hires
- Federal benefits package including health and dental insurance, generous leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement/401(k)-style savings)
Duty Locations & Assignments
Duty assignments are mission-driven and determined at the time of offer. Assignments may include Southwest Border priorities and other mission-critical stations across multiple sectors. You will be asked to select preferred duty locations, but relocation and assignment to prioritized locations may be required.
Example sectors and missions include (non-exhaustive):
- Big Bend, Del Rio, El Paso, El Centro, Tucson, San Diego, Rio Grande Valley, Yuma and others across the southern border and inland sectors
Duty location affects locality pay and total compensation. This is a career-ladder position with progression from GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12 (subject to time-in-grade requirements).
Other Requirements & Legal Notes
- Citizenship: U.S. citizens only.
- Residency: Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
- Age: Federal law enforcement retirement provisions generally require referral for selection before the candidate’s 40th birthday; exceptions apply for certain prior federal or military service and veterans’ hiring authorities.
- Formal training: Successful candidates will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy for ~6 months of intensive training (law, tactics, firearms, driver training, Spanish language proficiency training, etc.).
- Veterans: Veterans’ Preference and specific hiring authorities may apply and can change age/residency requirements for eligible applicants.

- Physical fitness and willingness to complete rigorous training
- Interest or experience in public safety, security, military police, corrections, or law enforcement is helpful but not required for entry-level applicants
- Willingness to work irregular hours, outdoor conditions, and varied assignments
