Overview

Confidential Client is hiring entry-level Border Patrol Agents (BPA) for full-time, career positions. This is a federal law enforcement opportunity with a multi-grade career ladder, training at the Border Patrol Academy, federal benefits, and recruitment/retention incentives (up to $60,000 total for eligible hires). Candidates should be prepared to relocate based on assignment and to complete academy training in Artesia, NM.


Salary & Benefits

  • Annual base pay for newly appointed BPAs (grade-dependent): GL-5 / GL-7 — $51,632 to $92,912 per year.
  • Eligible for federal benefits including health & dental plans, generous leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (similar to a Roth 401(k)).
  • Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 (first $10,000 after Academy graduation; remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location).
  • Retention incentive: may qualify for up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years.
  • Fully trained BPAs may be eligible for locality pay increases (up to ~25% in certain locations) and promotion along a career ladder (GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12).

Duty Locations

  • Important: duty assignments may include the Southwest Border and other mission-critical locations. Operational needs determine assignments at offer time; relocation may be required.
  • Prioritized (examples): Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Lordsburg, Freer, Hebbronville, Ajo.
  • Other sector stations nationwide (selected examples): Big Bend, Buffalo, Del Rio, El Paso, El Centro, Grand Forks, Havre, Houlton, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley, San Diego, Spokane, Swanton, Tucson, Yuma.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Typical BPA duties include:

  • Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws; inspecting documents and possessions.
  • Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers; maintaining surveillance (including night operations with infrared scopes).
  • Interpreting tracks, marks, and other evidence of illegal entry.
  • Conducting farm, building, traffic, city, and transportation checks.
  • Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, off-road vehicles, ATVs, motorcycles, and other government assets.

Qualifications

You may qualify at GL-5 if you meet one of the following:

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, composure under stress, ability to learn regulations/methods, and information-gathering skills; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree (four-year) from an accredited college/university; OR
  • A combination of relevant work experience and college coursework (evaluated from resume and transcripts).

You may qualify at GL-7 if you meet one of the following:

  • One year of specialized work experience demonstrating:
    • sound judgment and firearms use,
    • effective interpersonal skills in law enforcement matters,
    • rapid analysis and decision-making in enforcement or security roles (e.g., criminal code enforcement, corrections, military police, security); OR
  • Education substitution: bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year graduate-level coursework related to law enforcement; OR
  • A combination of specialized experience and education (evaluated from resume and transcripts).

Other Requirements & Important Notices

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Residency: primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years is required.
  • Age limitation: candidates must be referred for selection before their 40th birthday per applicable federal law; exceptions may apply for certain federal service or Veterans’ Preference eligibility.
  • Veterans: some applicants may be eligible for Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) and related exceptions.
  • Formal training: newly hired BPAs will attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy (~6 months) for instruction in immigration law, enforcement operations, driver training, firearms, physical techniques, and language training. BPAs are expected to speak/read English; Spanish proficiency is commonly required or trained.
  • Security/background checks, medical, and fitness requirements apply as part of the federal hiring process.
