What You’ll Do
Confidential Client is hiring entry‑level Border Patrol Agents (BPA) to join a federal law enforcement team protecting the nation’s borders. This is a full‑time, career‑track role with intensive academy training and on‑the‑job development.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Detecting, questioning, and inspecting individuals and possessions to determine immigration or customs violations
- Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, including night surveillance and use of tactical equipment
- Interpreting tracks, marks and other physical evidence of illegal entry
- Conducting farm checks, building checks, traffic and transportation checks, and city patrols
- Patrolling land and coastal boundaries using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, motorcycles and other operational assets
- Exercising sound judgment in use of force and firearms after required training
Salary & Benefits
- Annual base salary range for newly appointed BPAs (GL‑5 / GL‑7): $51,632 – $92,912 per year (location and grade dependent)
- Estimated typical pay shown on the source listing: approximately $89,870/year
- Up to $60,000 in hiring and retention incentives:
- Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 (first $10,000 at Academy completion; remaining $10,000 for accepting prioritized locations)
- Retention incentive: up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years
- Federal benefits including health, dental, retirement (Thrift Savings Plan), generous annual and sick leave
- Career ladder progression (GL‑5 → GL‑7 → GL‑9 → GS‑11 → GS‑12) with time‑in‑grade promotion opportunities
Duty Locations & Assignments
Duty assignments may include Southwest Border and other mission‑critical locations. Candidates will be asked to select preferred duty locations from a list; however, final assignments are based on operational needs and may require relocation.
Examples of sectors with available stations (sample, not exhaustive):
- Big Bend Sector (Presidio, Sierra Blanca, Sanderson, etc.)
- Del Rio, El Paso, El Centro, Tucson, Yuma, San Diego Sectors
- Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Grand Forks, Spokane, Swanton, Havre, Houlton Sectors
Locality pay and duty location affect total pay. Fully trained BPAs may be eligible for additional locality adjustments (up to ~25% in some cases).
Qualifications
You may qualify for appointment at different grade levels depending on experience and education:
GL‑5 (typical entry level)
- One year of general work experience demonstrating responsibility, decision‑making under stress, ability to learn regulations and procedures, and information‑gathering through observation and questioning OR
- A completed bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution OR
- A combination of experience and education (evaluated from resume and transcripts)
GL‑7 (specialized level)
- One year of specialized work experience demonstrating:
- Sound judgment in firearms use
- Effective, courteous interaction in law enforcement contexts
- Rapid analysis of information and prompt decision‑making (e.g., arrests, criminal enforcement, security, corrections, or related military experience) OR
- Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement, one year of related graduate‑level study, or a calculated combination of education and experience
Candidates with prior civilian or military law enforcement experience may be eligible for higher grade consideration (GL‑9 / GS‑11). Experience and education combinations will be evaluated from submitted materials.
Other Requirements
- U.S. citizenship required
- Primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years
- Age restriction: candidates must be referred before their 40th birthday under federal law enforcement retirement provisions; some exceptions apply for eligible veterans or current/previous federal civilian LEOs
- Successful completion of approximately six months of academy training (Border Patrol Academy) is required; training includes immigration and nationality law, driver training, firearms, physical techniques, and Spanish language development
- Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, operate diverse equipment, and perform physically demanding tasks
How You’ll Be Assessed
Selection is based on evaluation of your resume, supporting documents (transcripts where applicable), and performance on entry examinations and pre‑employment screening. Prior public safety, security, military police, or law enforcement experience can be advantageous.
