Role overview

Join a confidential client — a federal border protection agency — as an entry-level Border Patrol Agent (BPA). This is a full-time, career-track federal law enforcement position offering a structured grade progression (GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12), training at the federal academy, and eligibility for recruitment and retention incentives up to $60,000. This posting is for the Temecula, CA area and surrounding duty locations; relocation may be required based on operational needs.


What you’ll do

As a Border Patrol Agent (entry level), you will help secure the nation’s borders and deter illicit activity. Typical duties include:

  • Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws; inspecting documents and possessions
  • Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, including covert surveillance and night operations with specialized equipment
  • Interpreting tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry
  • Conducting farm checks, building checks, traffic and transportation checks, and city patrols
  • Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles as needed

Salary & benefits

  • Annual base salary (newly appointed BPAs): GL-5 / GL-7 range approximately $51,632 – $92,912 per year (locality pay and grade affect final rate).
  • Estimate shown on ads: $84,380 per year (estimate; actual pay based on grade and locality).
  • Federal benefits package including health, dental, life insurance, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (retirement savings).
  • Career-ladder promotions (automatic eligibility after required service time at each grade).

Recruitment & retention incentives

  • Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 for newly appointed BPAs (first $10,000 after successful completion of the academy; remaining $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location).
  • Retention incentive: may qualify for up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years.
  • A fully trained BPA in certain locations may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay under applicable pay reform/locality rules.

Duty locations

Duty assignments are determined at time of offer and may include Southwest Border prioritized locations and other mission-critical sectors. Candidates will be asked to select preferred locations but should expect that relocation may be required.

Examples of mission sectors and stations (non-exhaustive):

  • Big Bend Sector — Presidio, Van Horn, Sanderson, Alpine, Sierra Blanca, Marfa
  • Del Rio, El Paso, El Centro, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley, San Diego, Tucson, Yuma Sectors (multiple stations)
  • Other sectors: Buffalo, Grand Forks, Havre, Houlton, Spokane, Swanton, etc.

Note: Prioritized locations (for incentive eligibility) include Sierra Blanca, Presidio, Sanderson, Comstock, Lordsburg, Freer, Hebbronville, Ajo, among others.


Minimum qualifications

You may qualify at different grade levels depending on education and experience:

GL-5 (entry-level) — one of the following:

  • One (1) year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, composure under stress, ability to learn procedures, and information-gathering through observation and questioning; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree (four-year) in any field from an accredited institution; OR
  • A combination of the above (education + experience).

GL-7 — one of the following:

  • One (1) year of specialized experience showing ability to: make sound firearms judgments, deal tactfully with the public on law enforcement matters, analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions in enforcement contexts (criminal code enforcement, corrections, security, military police, etc.); OR
  • Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (class standing, GPA ≥ 3.0, or honor society membership) OR one full year of related graduate-level education; OR
  • A combination of specialized experience and education as evaluated from resume/transcripts.

Note: Candidates with prior federal or military law enforcement experience may qualify for GL-9 or GS-11 level announcements (see agency guidance for those announcements).


Other legal & eligibility requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Residency: primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • Age: This position is subject to law enforcement retirement provisions; candidates must be referred for selection before reaching their 40th birthday unless exempt (for example, current or prior federal civilian law enforcement covered by specified retirement statutes). Veterans’ preference exceptions may apply.
  • Background checks, medical, drug screening, and other federal suitability standards will apply.
  • Language: Ability to speak and read English is required. The agency provides language training (including Spanish) at the academy to help new agents attain necessary proficiency.
  • Formal training: Selected candidates will attend approximately six months at the Border Patrol Academy (intensive instruction in law enforcement, immigration law, firearms, driving, physical techniques, and agency-specific operations).
