Summary
Confidential Client is hiring full-time, entry-level Border Patrol Agents (GL-5 / GL-7). This is a federal law enforcement career path that includes intensive training, strong benefits, and significant recruitment and retention incentives for eligible hires.
Salary & Benefits
- Annual base pay range for newly appointed agents (GL-5 / GL-7): $51,632 – $92,912 per year.
- Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 (first $10,000 after Academy; additional $10,000 for accepting a prioritized location where applicable).
- Retention incentives: up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years for qualifying hires.
- Federal benefits: health and dental plans, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).
Where You’ll Work
- Duty assignments may include Southwest Border and other mission-critical locations across multiple sectors and stations. Prioritized locations (eligible for additional incentive) are listed in the full announcement.
- Relocation may be required; duty location influences pay (locality/LEO pay adjustments may apply).
- This is a career-ladder role with progression from GL-5 to GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12 based on time-in-grade and performance.
What You’ll Do
As a Border Patrol Agent you will be part of a federal law enforcement team that protects the nation’s borders and public safety. Typical duties include:
- Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws; inspecting documents and personal effects.
- Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, including covert surveillance and night operations with infrared equipment.
- Interpreting and following physical evidence (tracks, marks) of illegal entry.
- Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
- Patrolling boundaries and waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, off-road vehicles, ATVs, and other assets.
Qualifications
You may qualify at GL-5 or GL-7 depending on experience and education:
- GL-5 (minimum):
- One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, composure under stress, ability to learn rules/methods, and effective information-gathering; OR
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university; OR
- A combination of experience and education (evaluated from resume and transcripts).
- GL-7 (minimum):
- One year of specialized experience showing law-enforcement-related judgment and skills (firearms use, arrests, analysis and rapid decision-making, dealing tactfully with the public); OR
- A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate-level study in a related field; OR
- A combination of specialized experience and education (evaluated from resume and transcripts).
Other Requirements
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Must have primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
- Age restriction: candidates must be referred before their 40th birthday in most cases; exceptions apply for certain prior federal law enforcement service or Veterans’ Preference eligiblity.
- Formal training: successful candidates will attend approximately six months of instruction at the Border Patrol Academy (Artesia, NM) covering immigration law, law enforcement operations, firearms, physical techniques, driver training, and language training.
- Spanish language ability is expected; language training is provided at the Academy.
