Position Overview

Confidential Client is seeking motivated candidates for full-time, entry-level Border Patrol Agent (BPA) positions. This is a federal law enforcement career ladder role (GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12) that includes comprehensive academy training and on-the-job experience protecting U.S. borders. Duty assignments may be across mission-critical locations; relocation may be required.


Salary & Incentives

  • Annual base salary range for newly appointed BPAs: $51,632 – $92,912 (GL-5 / GL-7) per year.
  • Estimated midpoint shown on some listings: $68,332 per year (varies by locality and grade).
  • Recruitment incentive: Up to $20,000 (first $10,000 after academy completion; remaining $10,000 for prioritized locations).
  • Retention incentive: May qualify for up to $40,000 over the first four years.
  • Eligible for federal benefits including health/dental insurance, generous leave, and Thrift Savings Plan (retirement).

Key Responsibilities

As a Border Patrol Agent, typical duties include:

  • Detecting, questioning, and processing people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
  • Preventing and apprehending undocumented entrants and smugglers using surveillance (including night operations with infrared scopes).
  • Inspecting documents and possessions; interpreting tracks, marks, and physical evidence of illegal entry.
  • Conducting farm checks, building checks, traffic stops, city patrols, and transportation checks.
  • Patrolling boundaries and waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles as needed.

Duty Locations

Duty assignments are determined at offer time based on operational needs and may include Southwest Border sectors and other mission-critical locations. Candidates will be asked to select preferred locations from a list that includes (but is not limited to):

  • Big Bend Sector (Presidio, Van Horn, Sanderson, Sierra Blanca, etc.)
  • Del Rio, El Paso, El Centro, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley, Tucson, Yuma sectors
  • San Diego, Spokane, Grand Forks, Havre, Houlton, Swanton sectors
  • Note: Some prioritized locations (e.g., Presidio, Sierra Blanca, Lordsburg, Ajo, Hebbronville, Freer, Comstock) carry additional incentives.

Relocation may be required. Locality pay for federal law enforcement can increase total compensation (a fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to ~25% additional pay under pay reform provisions).


Qualifications

You may qualify for GL-5 if you have one of the following:

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making, composure in stressful situations, ability to learn rules/methods, and ability to gather information; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree (any field) from an accredited college/university; OR
  • A combination of relevant experience and education (evaluated from resume/transcripts).

You may qualify for GL-7 if you have one of the following:

  • One year of specialized work experience demonstrating:
    • Sound judgment in use of firearms;
    • Effective interpersonal skills in law enforcement contexts;
    • Rapid information analysis and prompt decision-making (experience in criminal code enforcement, corrections, security, military police, etc.).
  • Or a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (GPA, class standing, honor society) or one year of related graduate-level study; OR
  • A combination of specialized experience and education.

Note: Candidates with prior federal or military law enforcement experience may qualify at GL-9 or GS-11 levels. Specific announcements apply.


Other Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
  • Age restriction: Candidates must be referred before their 40th birthday under federal LEO retirement rules unless exempt (e.g., certain prior federal civilian LEO service or Veterans' Preference exceptions).
  • Formal training: Successful candidates attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy (~6 months in Artesia, NM) for instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses.
  • Language: Ability to speak and read English is required; Spanish proficiency is helpful and training is provided to build Spanish language skills.
  • Veterans: Veterans’ preference and certain appointment authorities (e.g., VRA) may apply.
