Overview
Confidential Client is hiring entry-level Border Patrol Agents (BPA) at GL-5 / GL-7 grade levels for full-time, career federal law enforcement roles based out of Brewer, ME (04412) and other mission-critical locations. This role offers structured career progression, intensive academy training, comprehensive federal benefits, and substantial hiring and retention incentives.
What You’ll Do
As a Border Patrol Agent, you will join a federal law enforcement team responsible for protecting borders and deterring illicit activity. Typical duties include:
- Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws
- Inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations
- Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers using surveillance and field operations
- Interpreting tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry
- Conducting farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, and city patrols
- Patrolling international boundaries and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles
Salary & Benefits
- Annual base salary range (newly appointed BPAs, GL-5 / GL-7): $51,632 – $92,912 per year
- Federal employment benefits including health, dental, retirement (Thrift Savings Plan), and generous leave accrual
- Locality pay and law-enforcement pay differentials may apply; fully trained BPAs may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay under applicable pay reform rules
- Career-ladder progression: GL-5 → GL-7 → GL-9 → GS-11 → GS-12 (promotion eligibility after successful completion of required service time in grade)
Incentives
Confidential Client is offering substantial incentives for newly appointed BPAs:
- Recruitment incentive: up to $20,000 (first $10,000 paid upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy; additional $10,000 for accepting certain prioritized locations)
- Retention incentive: up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years
- Total potential incentives up to $60,000 (subject to program rules and duty assignment)
Duty Locations & Relocation
Duty assignments may include southwestern border and other mission-critical stations; selected locations may require relocation. Assignments are determined at the time of offer based on operational needs and may not align with initial preferences.
Example sectors and stations include (not exhaustive): Big Bend, Del Rio, El Paso, El Centro, Tucson, Yuma, San Diego, Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Spokane, Swanton, Havre, Houlton, Grand Forks, Buffalo, and more.
Qualifications
You may qualify at GL-5 OR GL-7 based on experience, education, or a combination:
GL-5 (one of the following)
- One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making under pressure, ability to learn regulations and methods, and skill in gathering information; OR
- A bachelor’s degree (any field) from an accredited institution; OR
- A combination of education and experience (evaluated from resume/transcripts)
GL-7 (one of the following)
- One year of specialized work experience showing ability to: make sound firearms judgments; deal courteously with the public in law enforcement contexts; analyze information quickly and make prompt decisions (examples: criminal law enforcement, corrections, security, military, or related fields); OR
- A bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement (GPA or honors), or one full year of graduate-level coursework in a related field; OR
- A combination of relevant education and experience (evaluated from resume/transcripts)
Note: Candidates with prior or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify at higher grade levels (GL-9, GS-11). Provide documentation as requested.
Other Requirements
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen
- Residency: Must have had primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years
- Age: Candidates must generally be referred before reaching their 40th birthday per federal LEO retirement provisions (exceptions may apply for prior qualifying federal civilian LEO service or Veterans’ Preference)
- Veterans: May be eligible for special appointments (e.g., Veterans Recruitment Appointment); certain age restrictions may not apply
- Background: Successful candidates will undergo security and suitability checks, medical and fitness evaluations, and drug screening
- Language: Border Patrol work requires proficiency in English; Spanish language training is provided at the academy as needed

- Prepare transcripts, documentation of prior work and/or military service, and a clear, chronological resume
