What You’ll Do

You will provide direct behavioral health counseling to adults in an outpatient treatment setting, focusing on addiction recovery and overall wellness. This role combines group and individual clinical work, care coordination, and documentation to support measurable client outcomes.

  • Plan and lead group therapy sessions and conduct patient intake assessments following best-practice guidelines.
  • Provide individual counseling when needed and employ crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.
  • Assist with development, review, and adjustment of individualized treatment plans.
  • Monitor client progress toward treatment goals and document outcomes.
  • Coordinate care with the onsite multidisciplinary team and participate in required meetings.
  • Maintain timely, accurate documentation in the electronic health record and follow regulatory/compliance policies.
  • Support harm-reduction strategies and recovery-focused care.

Qualifications

  • Required: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in behavioral health, addiction treatment, or a related clinical setting.
  • Preferred: 2+ years of experience working with substance use disorder populations.
  • Education: Must meet state-level regulatory education requirements; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • High degree of empathy, cultural sensitivity, and ability to engage clients in recovery.
  • Team-player who collaborates effectively with clinical and support staff.
  • Comfortable with technology used for documentation and communication (EHRs, Outlook, Teams, Word).
  • Able to work in a dynamic clinical environment and adapt to changing client needs.

Licenses & Certifications

  • REQUIRED: Active entry-level clinical certification or licensure consistent with state-level regulatory requirements (example: CSAC-S or equivalent in your state).
  • Candidates must hold any state-specific credentials required to deliver counseling services in Virginia (or the state of employment).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: USD $52,000 — USD $58,000 per year.
  • Employment Type: Full-time.
  • Location: Portsmouth, VA (on-site).
