Role Overview
Confidential Client is hiring an Associate Software Engineer to join an engineering team building battery-electric, self-propelled railcars and related vehicle software. This is an entry-level, domain-agnostic role: new hires are placed into one of four software domains (embedded, full-stack/application, controls, or perception) based on strengths and program needs. Work includes writing and testing code to requirements, debugging on hardware, and integrating with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering teams.
This is a full-time, in-office position based in Saint Louis, MO. Occasional domestic travel for testing, integration, demos, and customer interactions is expected. Team size typically ranges from 1–10 engineers.
What You’ll Do
- Write clean, testable, and well-commented code for assigned components in embedded, application, controls, or perception domains.
- Test and debug code to root cause using written requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Validate software behavior on real vehicle hardware with senior engineers.
- Use git and team workflows for code review, issue tracking, and releases.
- Collaborate cross-discipline with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to integrate software with vehicle systems.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $70,000–$90,000 per year plus equity.
- Medical coverage: 100% of employee medical premiums covered; low-cost dental and vision options.
- Unlimited paid time off for full-time employees.
- Equity grants for full-time employees.
- Paid parental leave.
Basic Qualifications (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. Candidates completing degrees in December 2026 or May 2027 are welcome to apply.
- 0–2 years of software development experience (internships, co-ops, university research/projects and coursework count).
- Proficiency in at least one programming language such as C, C++, C#, or Python.
- Working knowledge of the software development lifecycle, testing, debugging, and version control (git).
- Willingness to learn beyond your initial domain; comfortable working as an individual contributor within a team.
- Fluent in written and verbal English.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.; F-1 OPT supported.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidate should have working knowledge in one or more of these areas (strength in one domain is sufficient):
- Embedded: firmware on microcontrollers, RTOS, CAN/serial buses, hardware bring-up and debugging (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, JTAG).
- Full-stack / Application: web/mobile front ends, backend services and databases, REST/gRPC APIs, industrial HMI, Android.
- Controls: MATLAB/Simulink or model-based development, control theory coursework, hardware-in-the-loop or simulations.
- Perception: OpenCV, PyTorch/TensorFlow, ROS/ROS 2, point cloud processing, sensor calibration.
- Experience in related fields such as rail, electric vehicles, robotics, automotive, aerospace, or participation in university competition teams (Formula SAE, Baja, robotics, autonomous vehicle challenges).
- Experience working on cross-disciplinary teams with mechanical, electrical, or systems engineers.
