The Associate Software Engineer at Confidential Client contributes to the development of the Confidential Client Common Automation Platform, a mission-critical air traffic management system built on hybrid cloud and data mesh architecture. Working within an Agile/SAFe framework, the role involves developing microservices, writing automated tests, participating in code reviews, and leveraging AI-assisted tools to enhance software quality and delivery. What You’ll Do
As an Associate Software Engineer with Confidential Client you will join an Agile team building modern, mission-focused microservices and platform capabilities. Typical responsibilities include:
- Develop microservices and service components under senior guidance
- Write and maintain unit, integration, and contract tests to ensure high code quality
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback
- Work within an Agile/SAFe framework — sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, PI planning
- Use CI/CD pipelines to build, test, and deploy code continuously
- Integrate with RESTful APIs and event-driven messaging systems
- Troubleshoot integration and test issues and support debugging across services
- Document code, design decisions, and technical approaches for team knowledge sharing
- Learn and navigate large, distributed codebases and interface contracts
- Leverage AI-assisted developer tools to increase productivity and accelerate learning
Core Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical discipline OR equivalent experience
- 0–2 years professional software development experience
- Proficiency in at least one compiled language (Java or C++)
- Foundational knowledge of object‑oriented design and distributed systems concepts
- Familiarity with microservices architecture patterns
- Experience with version control (Git)
- Experience writing automated tests in CI environments
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Comfortable working in Agile teams
- U.S. citizenship required
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust (background investigations will be required)
Preferred / Desired Qualifications
- Exposure to containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Python development experience
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure)
- Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
- Knowledge of SQL and/or NoSQL databases
- Experience or coursework involving event-driven architectures or distributed systems
- Interest in aviation systems, safety-critical software, or legacy-system modernization
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools (code generation, testing, intelligent debugging)
Location & Work Model
- Location: Gaithersburg, MD (this posting is for the Gaithersburg location)
- Work model: Hybrid — typically 3 days onsite / 2 days remote. Candidates should live a commutable distance to Gaithersburg, MD.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay Range: $57,850 — $104,575 (annual). This range is provided by the client as a guideline; individual pay will depend on role responsibilities, experience, qualifications, and applicable laws.

- This role supports government programs and requires the ability to obtain and maintain a favorable Public Trust investigation. Successful completion of required background investigations is mandatory.
