Department Overview

Confidential Client’s Electric Engineering organization ensures electric standards, process safety, design engineering, instrumentation/testing & controls, undergrounding, regulatory compliance, investment planning, and project delivery are in place to safely support Electric Operations. The System Protection Engineering group provides project and M&O support, disturbance and operations analysis, technical consultation and training, and equipment evaluation and standard development.

Compensation

Confidential Client provides the following annual salary range for this San Ramon, CA role. Actual pay will depend on skills, experience, certifications, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

• Annual salary range: $99,936 — $157,596

Key Responsibilities

As an entry-level Associate Protection Engineer you will support projects and protection studies for transmission voltages 230 kV and below, under supervision. Typical responsibilities include:

• Provide protection engineering support for projects and studies (≤ 230 kV)
• Issue protection requirements and prepare descriptions of operations for non-standard/localized RAS schemes
• Conduct short circuit studies and calculate short circuit line impedance
• Determine and issue relay and automatics settings
• Support relay system installations and testing (end-to-end tests, load checks, direction checks, relay releases, etc.)
• Conduct area coordination studies and participate in project walkdowns and meetings
• Review construction drawings and maintain records (e.g., relay database, transformer data sheets, short circuit base cases, breaker files)
• Review and approve new tools and training prior to rollout
• Design and set localized RAS schemes per Operations requirements
• Identify and help remediate protection deficiencies
• Provide normal and emergency maintenance/operation support: fault location, event retrieval & investigation, implement corrective actions, process clearance requests, and assist technicians/operators
• For Transmission group assignments: support hydro generation M&O, manage digital fault recorders and event retrieval, and conduct FERC generation interconnection and third-party load interconnection studies

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited curriculum (US or equivalent)

Desired Qualifications

• EIT certificate (Engineer-in-Training)
• ~2 years of engineering experience (desired)
• Ability to apply basic engineering principles and theory
• Basic understanding of symmetrical component theory and fault calculations
• Basic knowledge of logic gate theory and control circuitry
• Ability to read and interpret operating, single line, SLM&R, and schematic diagrams
• Ability to quickly learn protection concepts and apply them on the job
