Position Overview
Confidential Client is hiring an Associate Fire Protection Engineer for its Columbia, MD office (entry-level / new graduates encouraged). This is a contract, full-time role supporting fire protection, life-safety, and performance-based design work across Mid‑Atlantic projects. You'll work under the direction of licensed engineers and experienced consultants on tasks including code consulting, sprinkler and alarm system design, egress analysis, and hydraulic calculations. Early responsibility and growth toward professional licensure are expected and supported.
Responsibilities
- Perform professional-level fire protection engineering services under the direction of a P.E. or senior consultant: life-safety code consulting, sprinkler design, fire alarm design, and performance-based fire engineering.
- Develop clear plans, specifications, and inspection reports that meet professional practice standards.
- Assist with field investigations, inspections, design problem resolution, and coordination of design aspects within projects.
- Identify and apply applicable codes and standards for client inquiries and project compliance.
- Conduct and document building code analyses, egress analyses, fire detection and alarm system reviews, smoke control reviews, and basic sprinkler/water supply reviews (including hydraulic calculations).
- Apply engineering calculations for means of egress, allowable building area, sprinkler system water supplies, and smoke control equipment.
- Submit progress reports to Project Managers and Project Leaders.
- Prepare CADD documentation as needed.
- Read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, regulations, and professional literature to support project work.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Civil, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
- Strong written and oral communication skills — able to write reports, prepare presentations, and interact with clients and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated interest in advancing the science of safety and delivering excellent client service.
- Willingness to pursue professional licensure; Confidential Client provides support for licensing efforts.

Compensation & Benefits
- National pay range: $65,000 - $90,000 USD per year (good‑faith estimate; final offer will reflect experience, responsibilities, and location).
- Contract, full-time position.
