What You’ll Do

This role is embedded at a heavy industrial coke facility in River Rouge, MI and focuses on day-to-day environmental compliance support. As an Associate Environmental Engineer you will:

  • Conduct routine field inspections, walkdowns, and compliance checks across coke battery, by‑product recovery, wastewater treatment, material handling, and supporting operations.
  • Collect, validate, organize, and retain compliance data for air, water, waste, chemical, and community right‑to‑know reporting.
  • Support permit tracking, implementation of permit conditions, and maintenance of inspection programs and recordkeeping systems.
  • Maintain environmental databases, trackers, logs, and compliance calendars to ensure timely regulatory submissions.
  • Assist with investigation and documentation of environmental incidents, deviations, abnormal operating conditions, complaints, and corrective actions.
  • Support agency inspections, information requests, sampling events, stack testing coordination, and consultant/contractor activities.
  • Research and interpret environmental requirements with guidance from senior environmental staff.
  • Prepare draft compliance summaries, inspection reports, training materials, and internal communications for review.
  • Coordinate with operations and maintenance personnel to gather information and support issue resolution.
  • Perform other related environmental compliance duties as assigned.

What We’re Looking For (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, chemistry, or a related technical field from an accredited college or university.
  • Approximately two years of relevant work experience supporting environmental compliance or industrial operations.
  • Basic understanding of environmental regulations (air, water, waste), industrial processes, and compliance recordkeeping.
  • Strong organization, follow‑through, attention to detail, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work in both field and office settings and manage shifting priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and experience with compliance tracking systems is preferred.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to engage plant personnel and agency representatives.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE and follow site safety procedures.

Preferred / Nice to Have

  • Experience in heavy industrial environments such as coke, steel, refining, chemical, power generation, utilities, consulting, or regulatory agencies.
  • Prior exposure to permit tracking, emissions reporting, wastewater systems, or by‑product recovery operations.

  • Work both in office settings and in a heavy industrial field environment with noise, dust, odors, traffic, equipment, and uneven walking surfaces.
  • Must follow all site safety rules and wear required PPE.
