Position Overview
Confidential Client is hiring an Associate Electrical Engineer — Power System Protection to join a Protective Relay Settings team. This early-career engineering role (approximately 1–4 years’ experience) focuses on developing protective relay settings, creating downloadable relay-setting files, and supporting protection & control (P&C) design for transmission, distribution, and renewable-collector substations. This role may be eligible for relocation; visa sponsorship is not available.
What You’ll Do
This role offers hands-on technical work and client-facing coordination. Typical responsibilities include:
- Develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices, and client requirements.
- Create and validate relay-setting calculations using Mathcad/Excel and system modeling tools.
- Produce downloadable setpoint files using relay-manufacturer software (e.g., SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista).
- Build and modify logic used in protection and control schemes.
- Collaborate with engineers across disciplines to prepare clear deliverables and coordinate with clients.
- Support continuous improvement, quality requirements, and departmental design guides.
Key Responsibilities
- Continue to learn and apply departmental design guides, engineering codes, and Confidential Client policies.
- Prepare progressively complex engineering deliverables and equipment/material recommendations.
- Collect, assimilate, and manage engineering data; perform calculations using standard methods.
- Recognize and resolve problems within assigned areas; provide guidance to less-experienced staff and interns.
- Coordinate with project leadership and cross-discipline teams on less-complex projects.
- Contribute to client engagements and, where needed, support pursuits or proposals.
- Share knowledge of current tools and processes and mentor entry-level staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1–4 years of experience in the transmission industry or related power systems work.
- Understanding of Protection & Control (P&C) design: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, and wiring.
- At least 1 year experience developing protective relay settings (line, transformer, breaker, bus).
- Familiarity with power system modeling tools (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM).
- Experience producing downloadable setpoint files with relay vendor tools (SEL Quickset, GE Enervista, etc.).
- Familiarity with communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus) and IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV).
- Knowledge of commonly deployed protective relays (microprocessor, electronic, electromechanical).
- Familiarity with NERC-PRC and other industry standards.
- Strong written communication and ability to coordinate with team members and clients.
- Team-oriented, proactive, and able to work independently on assigned tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited program (U.S. or equivalent).
- Minimum 1 year of related work experience.
- Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding (background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search) when required and in compliance with applicable laws.

Compensation (as listed by state/jurisdiction):
- State of Colorado: $91,047 — $152,053 per year
- State of Minnesota: $86,909 — $145,142 per year
Estimated salary shown on some listings: $95,398 per year (estimate).
Final compensation is determined by skills, experience, qualifications, internal alignment, and geographic location, as permitted by law.
